Do you think high expectations kill your enjoyment of a story?

I like going in blind because there have been multiple times when something was praised as godlike, and I hated it, and things that are considered worthless pieces of junk are my secret pleasures. So yeah, I ignore all hype, be it positive or negative. (Most of the time. Like, I won't start liking the Gollum video game or something weird like that.)

I have to temper the expectations they set. Like if my brother starts saying "this is the best anime ever!" I know it will be good at best. No shots against him, but our tastes definitely dont align.

Communities are the same. If I see them hyping something I look at their track record. If they always hype garbage, and then start over hyping something it's probably absolute trash for me.

If someone's tastes align near perfect to my own, and they start hyping up something. Well... it's time to get the popcorn.

I think they can definitely ruin a show...
But I also think that you, others, and even once or twice myself, are quite stupid for letting that happen.
No excuse here. I was never one to take other people's tastes very seriously, but I've been trying to understand the hype lately, in case I'd learn something, you know?
Okay, someone has to say it. If you want good stuff, look at reddit, YT, and other dumpsters that recommend stuff only to get clicks and views. But if you want THE BEST, the stuff that will make your penis throb and fingers tingle, you have to ask me. ?
Based on your past recommendations, I think I should ask for what you think is trash~ :blob_evil:

I don't really recommend based on what I enjoy. I will only hype something if I see an aspect that the specific person in question will appreciate.

I had that feeling many times, the most recent one I remember distinctly reading Chainsaw Man. It was when I was looking for some horrors and other various stories more on the gorey side, and I got in hearing it was the most gorey new anime. It was... not. At least, not how I expected it to be, and it disappointed me massively.

Then, like 3 months later, I read it once more, because I found it in my feed again, and I wanted to try it again, this time without any real expectations, and got pretty invested in it. Still didn't read nearly all of it, because it just got dull after a while, but got way further than the first time.

And granted this isn't exactly "high" expectations, but I think the point stands.

Also, one thing I wanna mention is GL. There's that peculiar thing with my reading, that when I look for something to read without expecting it to be GL, I can read a lot of things including straight romance and BL. I don't like it more out of a sudden of course, but I don't really have anything inherently against it.

If I read a story expecting GL though, and I find straight romance out of the blue, it's just... bleh. I wouldn't say it repulses me, not that bad, but it feels... just bad.

If you like body horror, you should check out Junji Ito. He's pretty well known for that. It's not a series, more of a collection of short stories. So if you don't like some stuff, there are plenty to choose from.

Try these:
- Junji Ito Collection
- Junji Ito Collection: Tomie
- Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre

Or maybe you've already seen all of them. They're pretty popular after all. I can pull a few more out of my watch list for you if you'd like. I've been amassing tons of anime lately. I'm extremely loaded.

Same. I haven't watched Demon Slayer or Jujutsu Kaisen until this day, believe it or not. I've seen a snippet of their animations and loved what I see, but... Man, I hate buying into the trends. I'mma just wait until new trends arrive and replace them before I start watching~ :blob_uwu:
Funnily enough, I read the manga of demon slayer and food wars before they got an anime and exploded in popularity. Till this day they are on my “have to finish” list.
