No for one very simple reason:

I am not out to the world at large and right now cannot afford to be. I'm more involved with certain family elements than I'd care to be, and I can't exactly step out.

I did.

They ignored it, didn't even try to read a little bit.

The central theme of my novel was the family unit.

Mum knows I write but doesn't like the genre. She likes porn, so she doesn't read my non-porn.

EDIT: Ah, I do ask for some help at times and see what she thinks. This woman has been reading books since she was young so she does have some good opinions on direction, plot elements, etc. So she helps every so often if I'm stuck or if I do need some guidance. But I typically leave out big details since she doesn't really care too much. She does like hearing about my progress, though.

No- it’s not that I don’t trust my family or friends to be supportive, more that I want my work to be mine. I know some fabulously good workers/writers but they are not really fiction/fantasy based. It would feel kind of like asking a physics major for help with art homework. I know my work in comparison is amateurish and that the plot is messy, but it’s still my baby. I want it to grow into what it will be, mainly with advice from the readers themselves. My family just isn’t the intended audience. Now, I do share the artwork I make for it, however. I made the cover art and have been working on character sheets. I usually just say oh, it’s based on something I read (as opposed to what I’ve written.)

Hahaha...
After reading all these replies... all I can say is....

But seriously thanks to everyone for replying...! It makes me feel better about some... creative differences discussed in my household. :sweating_profusely:
I actually used to. Unfortunately I would write the kind of stuff they weren’t terribly interested in except every so often I wrote something kind of sweet and emotional and that they enjoyed.
This feels both a little sad but also wholesome, but i couldn't find an exact emoji to express my feeling so ill just stick with a like and a small reply for context. ^^
If they understood the stuff I wrote they would be very upset. Luckily my mother doesn't understand English.
But the ones in my family who do know how to read english...
Apart from my sister its a no go for everyone else. Its only me as her beta reader and she as mines. Though she doesn't like what i write.
Thank you for sharing this. This helps normalize some of the reactions I'm having to sharing. :)

They probably know that you know that they know, but let's not let them know that you know. I promise not to tell, anyway.

I'm going to hope that obligations and motivations will align in such a way that you're able to be the best version of you! But don't take that to mean I don't like you the way you are.
Yep. They know what I write. They know I write cuss words in my work. They know I write harem isekai stuff.

Also, my brother is one of my beta readers. And my mom's the quality control of my illustrations, even though some are NSFW.
Do you end up compromising with them if they disagree with a major plot choice? Or just say, nah you're missing the big picture?

Once; IIRC one of them got a friend who own a publishing business or something? But you got to pay first for securing copyrights or something, IDK (so, vanity publishing?). My friend said that's not the proper way to publish.

But anyways, back to my family, the only feedback I got was "Wow, your English is very good!"; I never even bother with them anymore.

Yeah, my wife helps me with the story, and my sister-in-law edits the chapters. My son also reads it and pesters me to write faster lol.

I do but sometimes it is difficult as they are really conservative in their views and hate fiction.

I definitely want my family or anyone for that matter to read my work and be vocal about it. Why wouldn't I want that? I sometimes bounce my ideas off them as well. Also, two of my aunts were my beta readers. But my immediate family members don't speak English.
My father would probably read if I sent him an autotranslation. But my mom lost interest.
Honestly, I get why people are ashamed of their inner demons. My novel has some gore in it too. But it's not the point of the story. And I think it's important to face your fears at that. Everyone needs feedback, even if we think we do not.

Nah, too embarrassing. And they don't know English so yeah, that don't help either.
