A reply guy is a person who leaves brief comments under chapters, in the vain of "thank you for the chapter" or something along those lines. Short, concicse responses, a couple nice words, partly to boost the numbers and partly to just show appreciation to the author. Reply guys are amazing, I salute their dedication. And recently I've had the privilage to enjoy the attention of a reply guy of my own. They have been leaving quick responses to my chapters for the past few weeks, when I'm feeling down and uncertain of my work their comments always give me hope that at least one person is enjoying what I put out. Here is my question for the class, though. If you are honored by your own reply guy, do you respond to their comments?

I have left a few responses under mine's comments, but there was no response to them. It's been a while since I responded, there is a finite number of ways to say thank you and I believe I have exhausted them. And I guess I've been feeling kinda bad over it, like I'm supposed to be doing something better. I'm curious about other people's opinions on that :)

I appreciate reader feedback in any form, whether it's favorites, ratings, or comments, whether they're criticisms or suggestions. By providing feedback, readers are contributing to the development of the novel. We should respect and value each other. It doesn't always have to be responded to immediately, but perhaps when you have some free time, you could respond.

I really appreciate the reply guys as you call them. They are treasures to writers. Sometimes they keep you up when you are feeling down. Sometimes they've helped me feel more energy to write and hope from their enthusiasm.

You don't have to say much to them, they aren't expecting a book in response. But they are your treasures. In a lot of ways they give you validity as a writer. So i would suggest, you should always reply to them. Always.

But I also have been in your shoes where sometimes I don't know what to say. And that's OK. Its better to be genuine. You don't always have to have a flashy reply. Sometimes you can even say, something simple like 'I'm so tired right now after writing that'. Or just a thanks. They are hoping for a reply too.

But the only time I don't always reply to them is when I'm sick and haven't logged in. OR if they do more than one comment per day on more than 1 chapter.

I receive them in my inbox - but all they do is ask if we can chat in a social chatroom someplace, or volunteer to draw art for me.
I have yet to see a single sincere message in my inbox. Usually, I think if people really love your work, they'll comment publicly and that way inform other people that they liked it, and that they too should check it out.

Same I also receive that in my inbox! Yeah I totally agree with commenting publicly it feels very manipulative.

You should reply whenever you can, and whenever you feel like doing so. If a reader is invested in your writing, I think they would appreciate even just a 'like' to show your gratitude.
