Do you prefer slow-burn smut or fast-burn smut? And why?

Hi!
I’m curious about what draws people into smutty stories these days, especially on SH.

I’m working on a story that’s very much “Fourth Wing meets spicy romance”—there’s a lot of worldbuilding, character development, and tension before anything NSFW really happens. When it finally does, it’s messy and meaningful. I personally love a build-up and want the payoff to feel earned—but I know some people just want the spice ASAP and get frustrated if it takes too long.

So, what about you?

  • Do you like waiting for the tension to boil over, or do you want that chemistry front and center?
  • Are you more invested if you know the characters first, or is the vibe all that matters?
  • Bonus: Any favorite stories (on SH or elsewhere) that nail the balance between plot and spice?
Would love to hear your honest thoughts! I’m trying to figure out how to pace the smut in my story and what readers enjoy most. Thanks!

I'd rather wait for the sequel ... then not read the sequel. Or see a classic James Bond movie "fade to black" where you know what's going to happen, and what happened, but don't actually experience it.
But I suspect I'm in the minority.

I like to read fast smut. If I'm reading it it's because I'm feeling lewd and the feeling usually doesn't last more than 3 chapters.

Proper erotica needs to be slow burn enough to get the worldbuilding, character development, and tension right. Otherwise it's just pointless porn. Think of it as the difference between cooking a delicious meal and eating it vs buying an ice cream cone and calling it dinner.

Anyone who can't wait would be better served with erotica in video format.

Some of the stories I like:
  • Dragon Goddess's chosen
  • Lilith: Origin of Succubi
  • Perversions of the Flesh
  • Rebirth of the Nephilim
  • Intimancer

Some of the stories I used to like (these stories started out amazing and then dropped off):
  • My Sudden Monster Convergence (no payoff; I read 110 chapters hoping the good stuff would come, and the author just removed the smut tag and decided to never add the good stuff).
  • Faith, Lust, and Hypnosis (I was expecting a slow decline from good person to bad, but when he becomes evil, it's just so abrupt that I lost suspension of disbelief).
  • Husband of the Goblin Tribe (This author does character development pretty well, but there are just way too many harem members for readers to keep track of them all; this story seriously needs a glossary that's 2-4 pages long on just the characters). It was also the second most popular goblin story on this site, so you can see how much potential it had.
  • I Own a Brothel in Another World (some harem members feel like token pieces; the author develops them nicely for their scene, and after they've had their moment with MC, they lose all relevance to the story).
