Do you listen to music when you write?

Depends on the type of manuscript I working with. If I want action and feel like I'm marching off to war, I listen to Sabaton. If I want to feel like there are butterflies in my stomach, I listen to love songs.

If I want to focus, classical music. If I want to keep going, lofi music helps.

I usually leave the youtube algorithm to take me on a wild ride, but my usual musical selection goes through a bit of Nightwish, another bit of Sabbaton, some Linking Park, followed by Bon Jovi, sometimes Rammstein, and so on.

I'd think it depends on the genre you're writing like if I was writing a western I wouldn't be listening to pop music

what genre are you trying to write?

no, not EVER. I need dead silence to hear my thoughts. Music is a distraction.

Generally, video game music. That's also how I get ideas for characters.

I used to listen to music while typing but not while writing my draft. I just put all my favorites on shuffle. If a particular song struck me as relevant to the chapter, I would listen to that one while editing.

Mostly, no. I do listen to music while writing on rare occasion, but not often. It's usually on days when I'm feeling like I'm in a somewhat elevated ADD state. (Mind having trouble focusing as it usually does.) I don't have that problem often, but it does help when I am struggling with such a state. Under all other circumstances though, I just find the music to be a distraction.

No, not when I'm writing. I'll get distracted by it. I can listen to music to help me get into the writing mood, though, so there's that.

I'll listen to OST from video games with similar settings or vibes to whatever I'm working to. Could be something like Halo, Elder Scrolls, Monster Hunter, Resident Evil, Made in Abyss, Nier. There's just so much good music out there. Sometimes, I'll also make my own music to listen to for certain stories. Helps with constructing a certain feel.

A lot of the time, yes. I have playlists for each WIP, with tracks chosen to fit moods or scenes. Plenty of metal in there (Rotting Christ, Windrose, Orden Ogan, Ensiferum etc), some Oriental folk metal (Suld, Nine Treasures, The Hu, Hanggai, Baifang) some Celtic folk (both rock and acoustic - Levellers, Skiltron, Alan Stivell, Dan Ar Braz), some Medieval-ish music (Faun, D'Artagnan, Salatio Mortis and their ilk), some Antti Martikainen fantasy soundtrack stuff. All chosen for characters, scenes, landscapes....

Silence for editing though. SSSH!
