I always have inner voices. It can be distracting sometime, especially when I read a story. I’m quite a slow reader because of it. But aside from its downside, it’s really awesome.

From the moment I wake up, musics or songs start to play in my head. When I read, I hear a different voices of different characters, including the sound effects. Most of the time, I can alter or change the tone of the voices at will, but it will get quite mentally exhausting if I do it too much and too long.

Aside from that, it‘s totally awesome. Everytime I read, it’s like I watched a whole movie or anime in my head.

Does it not get chatty at night? Mine suddenly has a lot to say just when I start to get sleepy.
Yes, most of the time it does, which is quite funny, as you get to have a second opinion on stuff that happened in your day.

How do you even think if you can't talk in your head or form mental images? Are you sure that's possible?
Ikr? Having abstract thought processing is weird if you don't have it yourself, and the same for them about us.
Nope... When I "talk" in my head, there is no inner voice... When I imagine something "visually", there is no visual imagery of any kind involved... When I "imagine" touch, smell, taste, etc, etc, etc... those "qualia" are similarly missing...

What there is, is the "qualia" of characteristics and the "qualia" of meaning, without the "qualia" they are the characteristics and the meaning of...

To be otherwise... would have to be some kind of hallucination... no?
Seeing as i can superimpose visual imagery over my actual vision, yes, it's some kind of hallucination. But i know some people can't do that.
I just found out something really interesting. Not everyone has an inner voice. I do, I always have and thought everyone else did too, but apparently I was wrong.

There are varying degrees, and it sometimes goes beyond simply having an inner voice. Some people can't form mental images too. Some have an inner voice, but it is limited and cannot be used without serious focus. Others have more than one voice, while others can mimic the voice of others from memory.

For me, it helps with writing, as I recite in my head as I read and write, and that helps with image formation. The conversations between characters take place in my head, and they all have different voices, so that helps with dialogue. That one down side is it can get too loud if I stay in my head long enough and I get headaches.

What about you? On which side do you fall and how does that help or handicap you?
My inner voice is just me. When I read stories I use different voices for characters but there's only so many variations i can remember and keep stable. Sometimes things will mess it up and i can't use the voices without them sounding weird until i sleep. Like if they're talking or thinking to themselves and that text is in italics, their voice becomes muted, and too much of that and it'll make it hard to use their normal voice. Same thing with brackets and such, their voice is modified, which is one of the big reasons i strongly prefer stories that use quotation marks for speech, though i couldn't care less otherwise.

Aside from that voice, I have pretty good visualization if i do say so myself. Well, it would be better if i didn't have absolutely shit spatial awareness. Sizes tend to get the best of me and trying to think of size differences between characters, even when that difference is small, usually ends up with very dramatic and hilarious sights, similar to Source(Half-life, Gmod) characters having their bone frames fucked with, or physics glitches that cause models to stretch and shit. And when it comes to say, a room of a giant or a large creature, it's also pretty whack and hard to get right in my head. Being American while mort stories use metric system doesn't help at all, but I'm trying.
Other than that, and as i stated above, i can overlap my visual thoughts over my regular vision, such as giving myself a HUD or something (which I've done before). It's a little weird and sometimes disorienting, but it's also pretty cool since I'm assuming it's something not many people can do. Hopefully. let me be special plz

I wish my inner voice was as useful as yours. Maybe the only thing stopping it from that is the fact i have absolutely terrible memory, so even though listen to music for most of my day everyday, i can't remember songs at all. And even if i do, I'd still get the tone wrong and it sounds muted in my head. And my lack of creativity (and social skills) to have a lot of different voices for characters. Usually just reuse the same ones.

My inner voice doesn't know how to shut up. Intrusive thoughts are the worst, but uncontrollable daydreaming is pretty rough too. Sometimes, when I read, my inner voice talks over whatever is going on in the story/book/manga I'm reading and I have to start again from the top 1000 times before I fully read the chapter. It's honestly exhausting.

I daydream constantly. Literally can't turn it off unless I have two things going on outside my head. Like watching a TV show and playing a video game at the same time. I'd say my Inner voice is stronger than my mental images, but they're both there all the time. And I can certainly think in different voices.

Yeah people always get confused with this concept.

They read things like your post and go, " those are your thoughts, dumbass. " which isnt wrong but not right.

And people never explain it very well, either. Now if you said, "there is a particular type of voice your thoughts take the sound of inside your own mind" then it's easier to understand. Everyone understand now? Good.

Anyway yeah, my inner voice is not the same as my actual voice, for example. My thoughts have a voice that is smoother and more level. Pleasant, even. It doesnt tire, it doesnt need to take a breath. Its flowing and constant.

And I can change this voice to anyone else's I know. I can read things in the voice of Morgan Freeman or Tom Hiddleston, for instance. Not everyone can do that. It's harder, because you have to consciously make that change and keep it up. But yes. This is possible. I feel most people just dont try to change their inner voice's sound, so they lack the skill
Yeah, my default inner voice has less defects than me just talking, but it would be recognizable as my voice.
For me, I trained myself to be able to essentially play a song in my head almost exactly how I heard it; having earworms was annoying so I used my earworms to actually play what I wanted to hear.
I also can have different sounding voices and imitate people in my head; I can't comprehend not hearing a character when reading.
Lastly, although it's been fading gradually as I get older, I'm able to construct the general setting of what I read. I think this has also affected how I dream, because my dreams are either a bunch of connected stories put together how a medley would be like, a revisit to a previous setting or scenario, or a continuation of a previous dream.

I would say that an inner voice has varying degrees. some people have more prominent inner voices than others and can come in various forms. I for one have an inner voice that I can use to act out certain scenes of what it is I'm writing. This allows me to get a clearer picture of what I want to express and allows me to see how realistic it may be. however, there are some points in which it acts as a sort of alarm. for example, if I'm cooking and I forgot to add something to the dish then I'll start hearing my inner voice asking me if I forgot something. Sometimes it will even tell me outright what it was that I forgot. Though, I can narrow this down to simply being my sub-conscience making me more aware of what I'm not knowingly aware of.

I have an inner voice, but I do not have an inner image, which actually affects my writing more then I thought it did. Since I can't see what my characters are like I can't describe them what so ever, and I also cannot compare them to real people because no real people look like my character, they have the characteristics I want but they just aren't, I know what my character look like... I mean I can't see them but I know ok! It's the same with buildings or just anything I have to describe, it also makes it hard for me to draw, the only way I can draw now is to use reference or let my hand go with the flow and see what happens.

Now there is also an extreme plus to this, since I am a writer. Since I cannot see what's going on, my inner voice says everything in words.

One of my day dreams looks like this:

Sabrina felt Joseph gently as they looked each other in the eyes.

"You look so beautiful today Sabrina..."

Sabrina's white little face turned into a shade of pink.

"J-Joseph.... I know I can't see you, but I feel your face is as attractive as ever!"
------------
You get it and it goes on and on. I like to say my Aphantasic daydream is the script and your guy's (who have a minds eye), daydream is the movie.

Since my daydreams are like that I can just copy whatever my daydream said and write it into a novel or something.

So that's a plus, I don't have to find words because they are already there and I don't get writers block either, I'm just lazy.

Another downside is since I can't see what's going on up there my body subconsciously does some of the actions that are going on. I look like a crazy person randomly caressing the air... ;~;

Since I have Aphantasia, I can't imagine what life would be like without an inner voice, because that's all I have, if I ever were to loose it I might start contemplating life...

Can we get some quotes? And whats her opinion of this thread? Need some juicy deets here
"Don't wish for girls to fall in love with you, thinking that your some Main Protagonist. Life isn't just about some anime you watched or being the lead in some story. Like, if you want some girl to fall head over heels in love with you, you always have to rely on how to talk and how to understand one. You don't even need to have a degree in girl's psychology and just be able to understand a girl's basic personality. "

Also, she commented about me mostly just lurking and watching videos since thats all I do and complains about it that I usually do this intead of writing her BL fantasy novels. You know what? Imma have to push her back and call on %@#%/$&@ to be my inner demon instead of Arcana. At least he reads me stories at night through mental nighmares than being sassed around.

My inner voice is more of a vague suggestion. It normally isn't really defined, but sometimes I can hear a certain person's voice if I focus on them. But it is always there. I can definitely hear music too. And I can taste food, very rarely. Images are also very vague, usually.

For those of you who don't understand still, it's a bit like this.

Inner voices come and go. I have one persistant one. When, I'm in practice at meditating, I can for several more. For dnd and authoring, I find it useful to fragment my consciousness into the minds of my characters.

Sadly, I'm not so good at it anymore. The sleep paralisys as annoying (terrifing until I figured out what it was), and having my heart suddenly drop from reflexive control to conscious control was way too scary, so I went ahead and unlearned a bunch my meditation.

Inner images take effort and interfere with recognizing what's around me, so I generally don't unless I'm resting.

Of more interest, I used to be able to inner math.
