If the answer is yes are you prepared to do so? If the answer to that is also yes then go right ahead, a lived experience brings an authenticity a researched one can't.

Not unless your blatantly using copyrighted content, aka, whatever inspired your idea for the story. Can't copyright a setting as far as I know.

I guess the only risk you're taking now is offending peeps that know the place and feel deep and pained about it for whatever reason, goodluck.

The only risk you'll face is from the virtue signalers getting offended at every damn turn.

(Cultural appropriation bs, whatsoever)

Nothing is stopping you from doing that. It's a setting first and foremost, and if it's fantasy-based then you can bend it as much as you want. If you're uncertain then look at something like Solo Levelling. The story happens in Korea, but later on a portion of it moves to other countries. Other stories do that too. It's a setting, and in a fictional context to boot. Do some research probably for some authenticity beforehand and you're set.

It's your story and fictional at the end of the day.

We live in the day and age where it is easy to research. Read some blogs about the area, watch some youtube clips etc. to get a feel for the place.

If you'd like to use South Korea as your story background, I can totally answer any questions you might have! I was born and raised there as a child, still pretty versed with the culture. And I can easily look stuff up in actual Korean wikis.

Funny thing is that Asians (cn, jp, kr) all write about European places all the time and nobody gives shit about how stereotypical or Asia-esqued it is. They also change the society situation to make it fit their plot. Why can’t a cat do the same? It’s fantasy!

Unless you become a world-bestselling web novelist I doubt people come after you with pitches and forks. Just make research to the best of your abilities and put a disclaimer that none of this has relations to irl people and doesn’t represent the present situation of places mentioned.
