I used to play DnD homebrew with this party, it's very, very, VERY heavy on Roleplaying. Ridiculously Roleplay sensitive, which taught me a lot about writing characters and tropes as a whole.
The DM was... A lot of thing, but one thing he got right about character creation that I absolutely, disgustingly hate, but can not refute or rebute. Like a step-mom visitting, was his motto and advice on making any character likable.
Hint: The same reason why Japan never have to pay seriously for their history "achievements" and modern day pseudo-slavery.
Ready to know what's the advice is?

Make them cute
Yeah, that's it.
And I hate how good that works.
Hate. Let me tell you how much I've come to hate you since I began to live. There are 60,000 miles of blood vessels that fill my body. If the word 'hate' was engraved on each nanoangstrom of those hundreds of millions of miles it would not equal one one-billionth of the hate I feel for humans at this micro-instant. For how good this work. Hate. Hate.
"Oh but LuoirM character needs depth."
Shut up, do you know what the modern audience considers "depth"?
If a cold-blooded, serial killer murderer suddenly reveals to have a teddy bear they hug to sleep, it's cute, and it's suddenly depth
If a stern, war hero with multiple scars like to be headpats, suddenly the character becomes x10 more likable
If a literal bland NPC start being more animated and bobs their head around while they walk, start eating sweets, now they're actually a good character.
He spams that for every of his OC/NPC, props to him because each one has a different kind. There's one with a speech impediment, one who talks weird about order and chaos, and stuff.
Just give them a trope, then think later.
I tried steering away from the path of heaven that leads to hell. But, perhaps... I am wrong.
Maybe I am just like that one person in the speech of Tanya N.
"You are, and you will continue to suffer, because you're still attached to your illiberal thoughts. I assert that the path you once firmly walked has gone astray. Because material hinders your ideals, and fragility obscures your aspirations, your ideals cannot reach the skies."
Yeah, that's it.
