Cultural Question: The "Silent Samurai" style vs. Active Promotion?

I sometimes apologize for writing too much in one chapter but otherwise my author notes are just character images for better visualization. As a reader I find "please vote comment" notes a bit needy so I made sure not to do it in my work. But sometimes it's okay to remind your silent readers to engage in some form.
