Chinese Character Names?

How do you come up with them? I want to write xianxia, but have no idea how to go about coming up with names...

There are a lot of name lists on Chinese sites. You literally just have to search for "cool ancient male names" to find them. Then you can plop on a surname of your choice.

Hmm, I ask uncle google to get name lists. Then I pick out the names I like and combine them until I get a name.
I also look up their meaning in https://www.mdbg.net/chinese/dictionary

for modern names: I google the name and hope that I get a Facebook or LinkedIn profile.

I develop family names first and went for a simple approach of naming families after geographic features. Then I decided given names as far as 'wish fulfillment' on the part of parents for their children, and (in my world), courtesy names based on the perception the young adult has of themself on their movement into adulthood. Epithets are all poetic-ish, and I would do more reading into poetry as well as the four classics before continuing to develop art names or other poetic epithets-- I don't use such epithets myself very much. I look up characters and then run the names by two different Chinese speakers along with the 'seed' of the idea behind their naming, and they tell me if the point is getting across. Repeat until your cast of thousands is named.
