Marvel Comics had (it came out about a year after I stopped reading comics for financial reasons, so I only know some details from Wiki and people discussing it) an entire universe called "The Cancerverse," a parallel universe (that wound up trying to invade other realities, including the main, or 616, one) where one of the heroes, essentially, became a carrier of a sentient cancer and it spread, corrupting everything. Believe there are a few graphic novels collecting the saga.
