Assuming you are correct, that this person is as arrogant as you say they are, I wouldn't bother engaging with them ?. Unless you know them on a personal level.

Reality will speak for itself ?. If they are "the best author" then reality will reward their arrogance. If not, then their attitude will make them crash hard.

The best way to deal with arrogance is ignorance ?. Just ignore them.

I wouldn't classify myself as a good author but to be so self absorbed that you believe yourself superior to others is just wrong. Just based on that information alone I'm sure that they are an egocentric piece of shit who is a terrible writer to boot.

No, I actually don't think so. Sure, they can chant, "I am the best!" in bathroom to hype themselves up, might even say this during interviews for some of that controversy juice, but I believe they never underestimate their rivals, or anyone on the opposite team. But most of the time, their mentality is to just do their best and ignore others

I can't be sure about authors but knowing athletes and chefs...there are definitely those that think they are the best. So I would assume it is the same in any skill based activity. Like playing poker or whatever. They even talk about it in interviews in sports about believing they are the best that they "have to" to get where they are near the top. Even if maybe there are some who may actually be better. No?

I remember when I had that huge ego. I remember writing the first ever story I ever wrote for public viewing on StoryFire and I thought that I alone would bring the site up to new levels with my knowledge on storytelling. Long story short, StoryFire's dead, and I'm moving on with a better understanding about how to write. Now, I think I'm better than beginner writers, but I'm kind of just average.

What this describes it the good ole' Dunning Kruger Effect where someone with little expertise in a subject thinks they know more than a professional studying for years. I have confidence in my ability to write, but I'm absolutely not perfect.
