Ah, I write like that. I tend to stick to one point of view per chapter, and wouldn't count that as head hopping, personally.

If the narrator is 3rd limited and change in the middle of a paragraph or chapter (without obvious indication, like a section marker), I would think we're using omniscient 3rd then.
I totally agree re: omniscient usage in that situation, except for the part where is seems to suggest that the shift would have to not be clear (not sure if that's what you mean, though). The way I was taught, it was first person, third person limited (no POV changes) and third person omniscient.

I think that a lot of people get hung up on the "omniscient" part because it seems to suggest telling the reader everything and that's definitely not the case. Neither does it mandate a narrator at all times. Switching POVs throughout the novel is third person omniscient. Whether it's done clearly and skillfully or not is what determines whether it's head-hopping IMO.

3rd person omniscient is my favorite. That's what I write in, as a result (though this poll may call it "third person limited with head hopping ? - not sure). I am encouraged in the poll results. Between third person omniscient and "third person limited (with head hopping)" alone we have a majority of multiple POV preference. There are sites you have to pretty-much apologize for using multiple POVs. My story may do ok over here. ?
I find it personally easier to write in first person, but third person can be amazing when you know how to pull it off well :blob_popcorn:
I think it's totally worth the difficulty level to have so much fun. If nothing else, the fight scenes are magical - being able to describe it as though I am an invisible floating camera with access to sound touch, taste, and smell along with sight. The freedom to describe scenes from whichever POV will provide the most tension/meaning/entertainment alone is worth it.

I'm so glad that third person omni seems to have a home here; it gets crucified in some other places...
