As an author, how do you feel when you reread your novels?

I demand my editor and proofreader return every penny I gave me, with interest.
Me too!

Wait... you don't actually have an editor and proofreader either, do you?
Mine sucks. I have to take away his hamburgers. I haven't had hamburgers in a LONG time.

Can Authors Enjoy Their Own Stories As Readers?
  1. As a writer, how do you feel when you reread your novels?
  2. Do you enjoy stories you've written yourself?
  3. How do you enjoy stories whose plots, characters, world-building, and morals you already know in detail without having read them?

1 - I do it often, mainly to see where iv messed up earlier. It also reminds me of some of my plot devices I added earlier that I have forgotten about.

2 - Oddly enough, I enjoy my own writing more than most others. Maybe I am a bit narcissistic like that, but I wouldn't write something I wouldn't enjoy reading.

3 - Do you mean as in your own writing? Usually because I am writing late at night and forget half the crap I wrote down, even after iv re read it 3 times while editing before posting it. Re reading it allows me to refine my character development, or might give me further insight on how to move my narrative forward that is organic to the characters and situations they are in.

If you mean other works, well its the same reason I can pretty much recite the script of my favorite movies by heart. Like rewatching a movie or anime, rereading a good book lets me digest the contents again, and take a deeper look at different angles and viewpoints of the characters.

When you write a lot you forget what you write. So when I'm blocked or doubting my own skill I reread something. I'm regularly surprised and delighted with what I write. I really surprise myself and often laugh aloud, then again, I enjoy my own humor.

FUNNY YOU SHOULD ASK!!!!

I dropped The Kriegers of Mount Castle High in June 2022. A week ago, DESPERATE for a creative spark, I re-read it, then started editing. Now I've written the first two scenes for chapter 26.

WHY? Because 3 years later I come back to it and said, "Damn, this story is good! It deserves an ending :blob_hug: (which will take another 50K words to end :sweating_profusely:
Sometimes I look back on the stuff I've written and have two main reactions: 1) cringe at what I've written (bad reaction); or 2) wonder how to heck I wrote that (better reaction).
I love the IMPOSTER SYNDROME. you read cool dialog you wrote sometime back and be like wow, I was better than I thought :)

Last month, while cleaning up my PC, I took out four screws to open it up and came back with five.

Yesterday, I stacked eight chairs to clean up my dining room. I came back with nine.

I re-read my Googledocs-written stories and still come up with typos.

The Infinite item glitch is real.

I reread my novel twice a week all the way through. Once I have more chapters, it'll probably be once a week.

Rereading helps me keep the plot points and characters fresh. It also helps me with brainstorming for ideas for future chapters.

I saw this advice of rereading all the way through a couple years ago and it's helped me immensely once I started writing again.

I've reread my content multiple times, but for my story here I have some criticisms.
1. It's a bit heavy on the porn at the start.
2. Chapters are short
3. My vocabulary could have improved, same with my grammar
4. Pacing for Act 1 is a slow drive.

But this is my second version of the story so I'd rather not change it again XD this time I will see to it until the end before embarking on the sequel!

Here's my smut with a story to it! It's a slow burn but I'm really enjoying act 2 so far. Act 1 is great too, but in short Act 1 is character driven while Act 2 is plot driven.

Not sure if I can be counted as one I tend to at times.

Create a bunch of chapter draft and then reread it and goes.

"Which retard wrote this?" And then I realized it was me, deleted the whole sh*t ? and repeat. Like I couldn't help but cringe at it the grammars and all...

I think that's why I prefer not to delve into smut. Re-reading my own work after several months can give me fresh eyes, but I used to be on furryMUCK before it went pure homoerotic smut, and looking back at those chapters and chapters of work writing good 'scenes', they are boring.

Last year I just went ahead and deleted all the old logs I had from 20 years ago... my writing was decent but the subject matter was dull.

Depends how old the writing is. If it's really old, usually I cringe. Like, wow! I used to write like that? ...Why? But for the most part, I enjoy them still because they show my development, and the ideas aren't bad (at least, I don't completely think so).

Does that last situation happen often? I never know anything before going into read something usually. I'll be honest: sometimes when I read something, I just read the tags. A little shock value is fun.

I love re-reading my own work, because nobody knows exactly how to enterain me or tug at my heart like I do. This is how I know I'm writing primarily for myself. If I don't like it in hindsight, or if it doesn't resonate with me in hindsight, then I did it wrong.

1) “wow did I really write that line? I don’t remember this at all…”
2) yeah more or less. because I’m writing for myself when I write so it’s pretty fun. Sometimes I feel like I fall short of what I want to express, but I’m overall satisfied with what I managed to type out.
3) honestly if it’s exactly the kind of tropes and setup I’m looking for I will devour that stuff. I don’t care if it’s the same flavor of cake I like my favs and I will eat multiple iterations of it as long as you vary the frosting and filling

As a fresh new writer, I love seeing my stories take shape and can't wait to get to the most interesting part of the story. Honestly, it's a lot of fun to read our own stories. There are things that I'll only understand later that I could have written better... but that's part of the journey, right?

There are only two possible reactions to reading my own writing:

A) This is the best story, told in the best possible way, look at what I did in this paragraph, so much meaning, information, and I've even done alliterations and shit, I'm a beacon, a Titan amongst men, I shall usher in a new golden age of... words and stuff and and and... isn't this character the best? I wanna hang out with them!

B) Which fucking baboon flung vaguely word-shaped shit at my laptop?
