Are people afraid to write reviews?

I have been thinking people really don't share their opinions much here. I wonder if it might be because they are afraid of review backlash. There have been a couple people that talk about getting review bombed. Is that playing some part about how people don't write reviews?

Nah, it's work and people are lazy. It's even more work to write a well thought out considerate review.

I probably wrote like one review per 100 stories I've read. Which is a similar ratio to the amount of stories that actually get finished.

I don't write them because I try to go by the intent of the 1-whatever system rather than 1 to max minus 1 is utter shit, max is okay. Due to this, if I review something, I only hurt it by reducing the rating.

Writing a proper and formal review takes too much consideration and time, and I do not think I'm qualified in most cases. I do comment, however, if I see any serious problems with the story or its potential, or otherwise try to contact the author personally.
Writing a public review is nerve-wracking, though.

im far too negative to write reviews.

when a author decides to mix things up to make things interesting my first thought is generaly "this is retarted, convoluted bs"

how can a sword who cant smell or taste cook better than profesional chefs. thats just stupid. a whole volume about a sword being a top tier chef....making cury...ffs i give up on this series

I guess it's also often a case of "if you have nothing nice to say, better say nothing." I don't really want to give my honest opinion on the first work of an author and discourage them. The same goes if I like a story, but there are tiny things that would make me reduce the general rating. I don't plan on reducing the rating either. But if a story is just bad I need to ask myself if my review which is going to be full of negativity is really going to help anyone. I mean, I don't want to write something that makes someone feel bad just because I don't like it.

because people here are too nice. they know this is an amateur site and belive that pointing out negatives might hurt the author. and it doesn't help that most authors get defensive on the least shred of criticism

There are generally only 3 situations in which I will write a review
1. When the story is particularly good and i enjoy it a great deal
2. When the story is particularly bad and pisses me off
3. When the story is actually finished and I've read the entire thing

1. We're too lazy
2. We have a lot of overlap with Novelupdates so we have rock bottom standards
3. I personally ignore novels with shitty english and refuse to touch them. If your sypnosis has garbage grammar I'm never checking it out even if just to review it. There are very rare exceptions tho (literally one novel). We also have a great tags system so I can personally filter anything I dislike.
4. I understand this is a site for amateur writers so shitting on anyone just because their shitty fanfiction powerfantasy is *gasp* shitty is an asshole move.
I understand that some guys want to get criticism tho. You'd have better luck finding it on royal road. Some bored redditor that took a break reading "generic litrpg numbersgouphaha no. 43761" will tear someone to shreds because of subpar grammar or something.

I used to write reviews for works in Novelupdates, but that is because:
1. It is probably in CN
2. It is finished.

I don't like to review works that aren't finished. Sure, I will post comments on individual chapters because they are by right, finished. But to review an uncompleted series feels like a tight slap in waiting.

If the start is good and goes to shit later on, I will probably have to step up for a PS.

If the start is bad, I would have long dropped the work and have a slight chance of picking it back up, praying that it gets better as I furiously zooms pass the front.

Rarely has a work remains good from front to end. Especially CN where the authors seem to understand they need to kill their cashcow and don't even bother dragging it behind the shed. Instead the slow strangulation is upfront and personal.

If it is bad, I will not even bother to talk about it.

I am very biased so I only write reviews for stories I either really really like, really really dislike or that really really irk me
