This is a vast grab.

Do you think there are characters that no matter how they try to redeem themselves you will never be able to forgive them?
It is called the moral event horizon. Cross it and there is no coming back. At best you can have an Anti-villain, but no. Not everyone can be redeemed.

Ask yourself this:
At the end of the original trilogy when Darth Vader was saved from the dark side, if he lived, should he have stood before a tribunal for war crimes?

HE BLEW UP BILLIONS OF PEOPLE.

I am more interested in whether paying back for all the crimes would make the sinner holy again.

Listen to a monster.

And I am a monster.

Karma is a lie.

There is no justice. There is no "fair". You operate on the belief There is this scale, with good on one's identity and evil on the other. At some point, you rejoin the side of angels if you just pile enough on one side.

No.

You have a pile of good and pile of bad and one does not negate the other. Ever.

Let me ask you this, I know of a 2 yo raped by the step father as the mother filmed to sell on the internet for drug money.

Did the little girl have it coming? Did she deserve it? How much good would those monsters have to do to balance the scales?

They can't.

But let's say they could. There is a numerical amount of good and once reached, they are redeemed. Then they can STOP BEING GOOD.

Does that make sense?

Tell me, do you believe in heaven?

Infinite happiness, joy, and mirth.

So, tell me, how could you ever earn your way into heaven when on one side of the scales is infinity?

This is why in religion, one need only ask fir forgiveness to be allowed into heaven. Where else could you draw the line? What percentage of infinite good must you do to qualify?

And so we cone to the crux of the matter. Can you be forgiven? Yes. Can you do more good then bad? Yes. Can you be redeemed? Maybe. Redemption is a factor of society. There has to be lines you cannot cross, or there is no society. Society has limits, or it doesn't exist.

Technically, I am trying to see if it's possible for an incestuous pedophile to be a main character and how to redeem himself so that people will like him.
I also want to see if it's possible for people to like any character as long as they redeem themselves or impossible for certain characters.
Why not, you just defined Mao, apart from the incest as far as I know, and everyone seems to love him!

Well to be fact it how you write it or interpret the story, we can have a one sided villain that is going to be redemption because he is hot but on the other hand we can have a likeable villain that have a goal and a explanation but get kill of in the ending.
But as many say death is a form of redemption and may god have mercy because I won’t.
In conclusion is all characters worthy of redemption depends on how you interpret the character or how the writer write her/he as.

R***ists, pedophiles, serial killers, and Nazis unless you give them a couple decades or more reflect on their assholery, but given that never happens in stories, they are practically unredeemable.
You can. It won't be targeted to the general public, but those who like dark protagonists will eat it up
"Haha, classic Joe, raping his 3 year old daughter lol, love this bastard"
I guess what I want to say is that you can try, and while most people won't love your character, it shouldn't stop you
What? Nooooo!!! What. Is. This?! WH-NO!!! :blob_no: :blob_teary:
