It was so bad, that I had to put out that it was a joke and apologized. It crippled me for about two weeks before things went back to normal.

interestingly... My next chapter goes live on april 1st, not as a prank, and it does just this. But it's an important lesson for the protagonist. Plus, she's basically gonna force-ghost him now, and I do plan on bringing her back eventually. Just... many chapters from now.

I used to. I would write a fake chapter that acted like it was continuing where the last chapter left off before going completely off the rails. Main characters would die. Side characters would would reveal godlike superpowers. Giant robots would appear out of nowhere. I made a personal appearance in more than one of them, so naturally every female character present immediately fell head over heels in love with me. But my reader numbers were always so low that it felt like I was telling jokes to an empty room, so I eventually I stopped.

Reminds me of my first account in this website, its basically me sending in letters in the form of chapters to one dude, if i were to be a live streamer I'm practically face timing a dude, who may or may not be, is awkwardly there as a form of sympathy.
