So... Perusing online book shop lists is something I do sometimes, and I have stumbled upon a huge number of various books on occult, and magick and that kind of stuff. Things like protection spells, moon spells and the like.
That got me wondering, anybody uses this as an inspiration for writing? That seems like an interesting idea to me.

I used to be super into different forms of magic in my early teens and would read tons of books and sketchy site to learn more about the different kind. I pretty much based all my magic systems on combinations of real world style magic.

And how is it? Does it make you feel like your worldbuilding is better-off with it? Is it deeper than it otherwise would be? Is it different than the others in general on this site? Is it deeper than the average here on this site?

I don't know if it's different from others but it doesn't follow the same gaming style magic tropes that many stories use. It's a lot harder to work with because of the limitations that most magic has though it does feel more realistic and in depth. I can say that I enjoy it and that I enjoy reading about it. However, this is only my opinion on the matter. Others may think differently. I do think that the difference between using real world magic styles versus gaming styles is like comparing Lord of the Rings to Sword Art Online.

Ai-chan learned wicca in Ai-chan's youth. So if you ask Ai-chan about the standard wiccan reading materials, Ai-chan probably have read all of them. Take note however, that Ai-chan's specialty is only scrying and potion-making. Ai-chan can't recall anything about demonology apart from the lilim, because there was a time when Ai-chan had persistent dreams of living as a lili.

So, Ai-chan is a witch?

I think it’s quite interesting. Regardless of what you believe it’s the type of magic I think is most engaging to write about. I prefer rituals over the cantripy World of Warcraft/D&D spell slinging.

I unfortunately only have secondhand knowledge of traditional magic. A lot of my stuff is occult-ish, but mostly made up on the spot.

I do stick to the idea and themes for my magical theory, but my story is meant to have a futuristic setting to it. As part of that, I consider rituals and spell components to be a more primitive form of magic, a crutch that helps lessen the burden. So I don't get to play around with any of it most of the time, which is kinda sad.

I think about what can you use in the elements, what counts for my elements, and how could a world adapt to use mana, also how would people learn to manipulate mana.

I have 2 thing related to my magic system. “Essence” and Mana, duh. ”Essence” is that of the elements, water, earth, air, fire, but more can be added, will, anger, flesh, then you have mana. Mana: Is a magical energy that exist in the world, it can mimic mostly anything, but that stuff is ”hallow“ only structure made of mana, the support beams, mana can not make something originating from life, and so can no make life… sometimes, but can form life.

I draw inspiration from supernatural stuff from my neighbors, through the word of mouth. I live in a superstitious country.

Me too, I live in a superstitious country where everything, failure, success, disease, death, birth is associated with mysticism, sorcery, and religion...
Growing in this place make me thing that magic do exist. So when writing I often mixt real urban legend from my place with the magic system in the game.
The power system that marked me the most was the one from Lordofthem
