Anybody here read the Inheritors? The ending really confused me.

So in general I've been trying to get into more books, and uh... I picked this one to start with (still not sure if it was a good idea) cause I've never really seen a serious movie or game or story about cavemen before. It was pretty good, but very confusing, and I was wondering if anyone else has read it and maybe they picked up on things I didn't? Most of my questions are about the last 3 chapters so I'll put them in spoilers.

My biggest question is, what the hell happened to Liku? I'm not sure if I glazed over something because the book does go on and on and on about environmental details, but in my head, the last thing I remember Liku doing is being dragged off back into the camp with the human girl. I know she got beaten with a stick but it didn't seem like the humans had any plan to kill her, they kept the baby alive and took him on a boat so where the hell is Liku?

Also, what happened with Fa and Loks plan to kidnap Tanakil to exchange for the baby? Lok grabs her, and she freaks out and it almost seems like she goes catatonic? and then all of a sudden there's this big wooden thing that the humans are stabbing with sticks and Lok and Fa try to pull the sticks out? and then they have Tanakil again their arms but... like a few moments later she is back with the humans again, and then Fa is I presume dead? she starts floating limply in the water and then it changes perspective I think? It starts talking about this red creature which I'm assuming is how the humans see Lok who I assume is still alive? and we follow him for a bit as he mucks about? By now I'm also assuming that the humans are way down the river and 11 and 12 are happening at a similar time.

My reading at the last bit of 11 is that Lok seems to lay down up where they used to live, and then Hyenas come to try to eat him, but he lets out one last defiant cry that scares them off? maybe it's him realizing he's all alone now? I don't even actually know if the red creature is Lok to be honest, chapter 11 is probably the most confusing chapter in the whole damn book for me.

Anyways, I'd love some help with this cause I did like the book for the most part, A little confusing and I kinda wish the narrator was just full omniscient instead of this weird middle where he's sometimes as dumb as Lok and other times not. But other than that and the confusing ending I liked it.

No idea what that is. Just commenting for commentings' sake. No idea if that made any sense. And I'm definitely not high, just bored.

It's a William Golding novel about a group of Neanderthals and their first encounter with homo sapiens. It's kind of hard to parse what's going on because the narrator seems to be sometimes locked with the same complexity of thought that the neanderthal protagonist has. The last 2 chapters especially are just all over the place, at least from my reading.
