You may joke, but one of my former neighbors is in this business. It has a proper, fancy name, too: creative reputation management. His specialty is "social endorsements". Go figure. It must make some decent money, too, judging by his socials.

I check if a novel has negative reviews. If there are twenty 5* reviews but not a single negative review, that is plenty suspect. Either it is a great literary masterpiece or, more likely, the author has a large following, many advanced readers, does review swaps, and pays some people in the "reputation management" business.
