My story has 56 readers, but I'm curious what that means. Is that number simply the amount of people who have clicked on it and read it, or are they actively following that story? When I go to my profile, it says I have 1 follower. So Readers/Followers. I assume followers are people who follow the author and will get updates on new stories, while readers get... chapter updates or, no?

It means that they are following that story. Maybe not so actively, but at least they bothered to bookmark it.

Kinda.

Thank you for the answer.

What do you mean by "kinda" though? lol
If I'm not mistaken, readers can adjust the setting so they WON'T get the notifications whenever the new chapter comes out. It all comes down to the personal preferences of every reader.

56? I only got 30!

Having that amount of readers doesn't mean everyone reads though, you can refer to the statistics tab of your story and look how many readers actually got past the first page, bookmarked it, or who commented on your story. I got 30 readers, but only a handful actually makes it past the prologue, some leave a comment, others don't, but you can check up to which chapter they read.

Well its not like I'm flexing, but my story got 136 readers. But its just like you said only a most of them read until the most recent ones.
P.S: Me getting 136 readers is very lucky. Because I also have 3 novels 2 of them are active I need to split my time into real life and novels. So I always just thanked everyone who read my novels.

57 with 11 planning to read. But I have a really sweet cover, too.

I noticed that, and I really like how it shows you that metric!
Wait a min, I just realised your name, aren’t you the author of Oni Rokura

Here's some advice from someone with a decently sized reader base of 300. The way you can get to those high numbers(around 500-1000 people reading daily) then what you're going to need to do is release a chapter every day. I released a chapter everyday for my first fifteen or so chapters which got a lot of attention on my story to the point where I could finally slow down.

As for how to get those enormous numbers(1500< readers daily) that's lost on me. I've only gotten to 1000 readers once and it shot down to around 400 after a while. The only advice I can give on that would be for you to advertise the living hell then hope you get on trending, then hope again if even a fraction of those readers you got from trending stays cause 90% of time they don't and move on to the next thing. It's a combination of dedication, persistance, and insane levels of luck.

You want my real opinion, don't focus on numbers. I did on RR(RoyalRoad) and got burnt out insanely quick. Just work on your craft and then for your next project, or when you think you're ready, release something else or advertise the living hell out of your current story.

Though what you said matters and helps, it's actually somewhat easier to get over a thousand readers daily. To get a lot of readers\views, you must write what's popular.

Really? Well when I look at 1000 I think big and I've rarely seen stories outside of the ones from trending get above 1500 on average.

Look at Saileri's works, that yuri Naruto fanfic, and I'm too lazy to look for other works, but there is a lot of them. Edit. Also RaizarP's works.

As for the original purpose of the thread, what the readers mean; It just indicates how many people have added your story to their bookmarks.

Most readers on this site will binge read about once a month from what I've noticed: my new chapters average 6-800 views in the first week, then climb to 1500 over the next month or two.

The vast majority of people do not opt in for new chapter notifications, and most people's reading lists have well over 100 stories on them.

‐-----

As for what this thread devolved into; getting more readers and more consistent readers.

Writing what's popular helps, but you also need to maintain some level of quality and be consistent.

I upload both of my stories 2x a week, on the same day, at the same time. This has caused several of my readers to start reading weekly, on the second upload day, instead of monthly binging.

Consistency also helps with getting on trending, which is your fast ticket to breaking the 500 reader barrier.

As far as quality is concerned, there is some utter shit on this site. If you have popular genres, you will still get a following even with atrocious grammar and frequent spelling errors, but you will struggle to break past 100 or so readers.

Length is also important, the sweet spot is 2-3.5k words, though longer is good if you can manage it.

People say to advertise everywhere, but in the grand scheme of things, that won't help much. Your biggest windows are "New Series", "Trending", and "Newly Updated".

The absolute biggest ticket though, is to not get distracted and just do your thing.

My data and analysis comes from what I have observed with my main series as it approached 1600 readers, and my second series that is currently hovering around 400. Both of them are popular genres, (Gender Bender Isekai, with the first also being tagged as Girl's Love) but that wouldn't have mattered if I wasn't consistent and well edited.

It's strange. My first story would get between 800 and 1500 views a day early on when I was posting daily. After I slowed down the view count dropped a good bit but because of the fan base that was built up it stayed fairly steady. At one point it was even on trending but at this point I can say that trending is more bragging rights than anything. It doesn't do much else for your story in the long run other than the sudden increase in readers and few actually manage to keep their stories in trending.

Because algorithms probably block them from getting trending.
Perhaps. I don't know too much about coding technicalities but that's probably true. Strangely, some stories repeatedly pop up in trending even though they aren't really that good.
