Monster - For learning how to write an exceptional psychopathic antagonist.
Vinland Saga - Great story and has a revelation moment where you realize:
The protagonist is actually the side character of the true story - of Askeladd
Konosuba - Just great comedy
Attack on Titan:
For alone because of how well it foreshadowed the existence of a more advanced civilization throughout the seasons
The Twelve Kingdoms - amazing female protag isekai.

Studio Ghibli animes.

Nausicaa of the valley

Castle in the sky

Graves of the firelfies

My neighbor Totoro

Kiki's delivery service

Omoide poroporo/Only yesterday

Porco Rosso

Whisper of the heart

Princess Mononoke

Spirited Away

The Cat retuns

Howl's moving castle

Ponyo

The wind rises

The tale of princess kaguya

When Marnie Was There

Ronja the Robber's daughter

The boy and the Heron

There's some film that sre better than the other, and some that are worse than other.

But if you compare the not the best of ghibli vs average show, they still shine brightly.

Its like medium-low quality gold vs average iron. Its not the best gold, but it's still better than average iron.

--------
By the way,

My current watch is Omoide Poroporo/Only Yesterday.

Its a really good story for adults and people who have been working in their career and wondered about their lives choices.

Yes, it talked about the mid life crisis.

About the actions we do in our childhood days back then, how it affects us, and how we see it as an adult.

Its not popular because its catering to adult, instead of catering for teen or child. The market share of cartoon/anime for child and teen is waay bigger than for adult. But its really good, at least you should see it as an adult who knows how it relate to us.

@K5Rakitan I would like to also reccomend this to you, because the story is far far more relatable to adults.

You can watch this while also finding ghibli films for your kids to watch. They're quite educational.

Omoide poroporo/Only Yesterday is a very good watch for Female adults whos started to feel the effect of adulthood in their 20s-30s than for kids who likes cartoon.

And please watch to the end, the credit isn't the end of the story.

I tried reccomending it to my mom, but she pretty much ignores it midway through and just watch her regular favorite show. My mom is not that literature aware.

I'm pretty much venting. But i guaranteed that Omoide Poroporo is that good for adult female audience.

how a realist hero rebuilt the kingdom
it's by far one of the best isekai I've ever seen. It's what it says on the tin, instead of a power fantasy, it's a big brain fantasy.
Not only is it for those with a big brain, but the mc isn't a wuss and actually has enough resolve to go through with a hard decision.

Soo really thought long and hard about this. (You know the usual 30seconds).
Isekai, going to another world may or may not have a new body. If so body improvement is something that could be useful.
Soo... Dumbbell Nan Kilo Moteru

I have no clue when it aired, did not look it up. That way I can get away with not knowing its a 70's, 80's, 90's or whatever thing.

Saying 90s anime is "not old" compared to 70s/80s anime in 2024 is like saying the High Middle Ages aren't part of the Middle Ages in general.

So, just for fun, I recommend OG Hokuto no Ken (Fist of the North Star), from '86. 'Tis the anime that makes grown men shed the manliest of tears.

Moving on, more "recent" recommendations:

#. Planetes (2004) - Possibly the most realistic and most engaging slice-of-life near-future sci-fi in all of existence that's about the life of orbital garbage collectors. ('cause Kessler Syndrome, you know.)

#. Kurosu Anju Tenshi to Ryū no Rondo (Cross Ange: Rondo of Angels and Dragons; 2014) - Girl power, mechas, dragons, eco fiction, awesome music, the works! The main villain is a bit weak in terms of writing, but everything else is awesomesauce.

#. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (Gurren Lagann; 2008) - The definitive "Humanity, fuck yeah!!!" story that all others are compared against. Has some plot holes here and there, but the pacing, breakneck tempo, kickass OST, and general absurdity of it all make up for it in spades. (It's also the origin place of the "unsheathing the sword" meme)

#. Kobayashi-san Chi no Meidoragon (Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid; 2017-) - Yes, on the surface it's a silly slice-of-life with plenty of fanservice and over-the-top sexual innuendos, but it has a surprising amount of philosophical depth, thanks to the juxtapositions of human and draconic worldviews. It's currently an ongoing series, but S1 and S2 that are out so far can provide much food for thought, if viewed with the appropriate mindset. Also, the music is very good.

There's many more, but other people have already made some cool recs, which I won't repeat here. Bear in mind, what I've shared I consider top of the top, not only in terms of anime, but in terms of stories in general, regardless of medium. This is art that causes one to grow, not just be entertained.

Also, part of the fun is to discover your own favorite all-timers. Anime is so vast in terms of content, it's almost silly.

Regards,
Sagacious

PS. Oh, and I'm serious about Hokuto no Ken. It's great. It has many, many filler episodes, though, but the good episodes more than make up for the rest. Rest in peace, kung-fu Jesus.

Log Horizon,
Discover how the world works.
Be it a normal day in life yet.
Will you risk for a chance of salvation?
Or be corrupted at the end!
There is a joke early, unfortunate for season 3.
Not sure where the author is but hopefully he/she returns.

No Game No Life. One of the few anime that hit almost every button for me. The Fruit of Grisaia as well. I don't know how many times I've rewatched them.
