Why did you abandon your first novel?
Somehow lost the momentum 4 years ago, which never recovered.
What were its problem(s) for you to abandon them?
1. I cringe at rereading it. But I still like the characters. Neva might make a cameo in State of Art someday. It's somewhat in the same world/universe. (SotA is technically 22 years later. Neva's player would be around 63 during those events. But since she had been Isekai'd to a game world, it's unclear if she ever returned to the real world.
2. Past me, when I wrote Neva, did not bother to disguise IPs and used the official names. That is a cease & desist waiting to happen. SotA is using fake names (but anyone can see right through it, on purpose). So instead of taking the time to fix Neva, I started another project that shared a ton of the same ideas.
3. I didn’t think that origins fans remembered or would have come back for the new chapters if I had taken Neva off of hiatus, so I perceived no benefits to going through the trouble.
4. I pantsered my entire way through that story. SotA had tons of planning before I wrote the first sentence. Turns out I am actually better at planning than pantsering, even though I still think of myself as a discovery writer.
5. Neva was a self-insert character. I have moved on from where I was she I wrote that story, and it successfully cracked my egg. For what it's worth, Neva served its purpose.
Would you consider your first abandoned novel to have become a big hit if only you had given it more effort?
It actually had hit trending back in the days, so it might have had? There was a number of fans who mentioned to me being sad to see it go on permanent hiatus?
