Sadly, every bit of so-called popular fantasy currently coming out has 3 things in common.

1) Has a female author
2) Is inevitably fantasy with more romance than necessary, and the romance is very clearly written from an unrealistic woman's POV
3) The author is Brandon Sanderson.

Source? I've been to various Walmarts in 5 different states over the past month. It's the same crap in all of them. The authors change, but they still follow those same 3 rules I listed above.

I CAN give my views of Lady-Fantasy fiction because I have read it. I randomly picked 4 different authors among the many, many more I saw in different Wal-Mart selections and read the first books in their series. It's nauseating how accurately I could predict what happens.

For example, wanna know which male character gets with female MC in the end? Guaranteed, it's the one that ignored her and/or treated her like a cockroach in the beginning during their first interaction. Guaranteed.

The nice guy? Either ends of being the villain in the end, or sacrifices himself in some way for female MC. Guaranteed. No deviations. Not. A. Single. One.

As for Brandon Sanderson, I honestly can't make myself read him. When I see something EVERYWHERE like I'm seeing him as of the past 2 years, (I mean even overseas guys!), it gives me an almost physical repulsion to it. Its too much. He is fucking everywhere. Literally. It's absurd.
Maybe I would like him, but I'll never know. I feel like you could almost chant his name before going to sleep and he would speak to you in your dreams. He's just...too much...all over the place.

Am I the only one who ignores all the popular fantasy authors and series, yet reads the worst, f-tier crap written by authors from my country?
I don't ignore authors - I just read stand-alone books or ones with very few sequels at present so that I'll be likely to find the rest of the story, regardless of quality. I also used to hit used book stores to find stuff, but there are no longer any nearby, sadly. But I'll read all of it - f-tier crap, popular stuff (sometimes the popular stuff IS f-tier crap, just well-marketed or that just happened to hit at just the right time to seem new and fresh ... oh, like the Twilight series, for example).

He does seem to be like Patterson or a few others - who could not possibly be writing that much on their own (Patterson actually is NOT - he followed the pattern of one of the action writers of the 90s, I think Tom Clancy but could be wrong there, who has a stable of up-and-coming writers he "mentors" - they get mentions on the indica of the books, get a salary, and work in teams to do about 80% of "his" books, while he polishes it, fills in the details they missed (or the sections he just did not trust them to write, or just really wanted to do for himself ... or had a guest author who shares the cover with him to write).

I haven't read many hardcopies lately. I think the last physical book I read that wasn't a physics textbook was "Dragon Princess" by S. Andrew Swann. The book was about a dragon with a gambling problem who tried to body swap with a princess he kidnapped to escape his Debt to the Fey. I laughed quite loudly for this one. Rather than being especially popular, the author seems to be locally distributed, with books that mostly show up in independent brick and mortar stores near Lake Erie or occasionally as ebooks at larger corporations.

I mean, there are Pratchett, Ursula le Guin, Robert Howard, etc. Instead of reading their works I read stuff that is... Not WNs or LNs btw. I actuallly pay for shitty, dirt-cheap books and read them. Example. A Wizard of Earthsea will cost me around 10 bucks, the shit I'm buying costs around 2 dollars.

The direction of the topic was slowly switching to, what's coming out right now so I went with that. None of the names you mentioned appear in easy access in my country. You have to go to specific book stores which are slowly vanishing or order online. So I described what I see in most supermarkets that have large book sections.

I'm a dude so I generally didn't expect to like all of this "lady-fantasy" but I decided to give it a try because a woman I know said I was "muh generalizing."

Nah, I was right. Quite often in reality, you CAN judge a book (or person) by it's cover and be VERY accurate. I know I've been fairly accurate in doing so. But oh well.

Those names were just an example, as for topic changing, I can't do much about it. Initial theme was about traditionally published books, and how I choose crap over something good.

Also, I didn't care for Ursula Le Guin and her Earthsea stuff. And if you mean Robert E. Howard than yeah, I'm amazed at his world building. It can be hard to get a hold of his stuff but worth it if you can. As for Pratchett, it depends on which of his books we're talking about. To me, he had hits and misses. Nothing ever bad, just some of his works werent up to par compared to others.

Yeah, Clancy was the one who had proteges writing for him.

I do the same but with Japanese and Chinese novels. And trust me,You don't want to do the same as me. These authors are insane, somehow i am more sane than them. Th—

I've read Mistborn and Warbreaker, and I must say Brandon Sanderson's works are basically heavily censored Young Adult Novels.
Don’t know what country your from, but in the US most published modern fantasy novels are either horny smut for teenage girls, or cookie cutter Brandon Sanderson wannabes so I don’t blame you
Too bad they are one and the same.

Those authors will never:
1.) Give you up
2.) Let you down
3.) Turn around and desert you.
