Lack of respect. It can be something simple, like interrupting their sentences, etc. mistreating waiters, whatever

Or being a self absorbed people pleaser. Treating a waitress better than your own partner because you want to “be a nice person” but really you just want to be flattered all the time. You’ll leave a 50% tip but let your SO eat ramen noodle packets 24/7 because you feel like you “caught” them already and so their opinion doesn’t matter.

Animal abuse.

Being a Doormat. Being unwilling to stand up for your partner.

Always being fine with whatever. Just overall being so detached that you never get angry at them or care how they treat you or even if they are there

being a different person around others. You switch your personality around outsiders, making your partner feel like they are living a lie outside or like the life they have with you isn’t “good enough” for you to display

A serial cheater gets with someone who amassed their wealth by selling drugs and committing insurance fraud. The cheater discovers that their partner had been doing it for years, by reading a document they kept in their safe.

You did want them both to be bad people right? This is a bit extreme hmmm....

It can just be things that have been piling up for a while. If you don't want it to feel random, you can have the character talk about their relationship with a friend or someone, then realize things and decide it has to end. Something like gaslighting, lack of respect, or shamelessness all can be valid reasons, although they don't generally result in anything in a matter of days, but weeks or even months.

relationship is no longer beneficial. they were both using each other for something. one lost their 'value' or one got what they wanted.

I broke up with a guy for being a bad driver. I don't drive, but I know when my safety is at risk.

I don't feel like talking about my big 2014 breakup right now, but you might be able to find stuff about that through the search feature.

While the above posts are mostly mentioning from the within the couple, how about from outside?

Maybe one of them found someone better and decided it is best to move on?

How about a sudden need to be apart and they decided that long distance relationship is not what they want?

What if outside forces are pressuring them to split?

Ps. I know I am going out of bound since @HelloHound is asking for reasons to break up from a scummier person, but my post can still apply.

Finding another, better person is always a good reason for a break up.
