Write the story you want to read. If you can't decide, flip coins. Experiment. Write multiple stories at the same time until you figure out what makes you happiest.

Write what comes naturally to you as a draft, decide if it’s worth it, then go for what development you like more.

Just receiving blueprints is kinds corny.

More compelling would be to be half-possesed by some old-timey engineer.

I've been toying with a couple of story ideas. Both of them in a pre industrial parallel world. Haven't been able to decide if my mc should be the only person with magic or not. Also want to use a system, but not one that is too cliché. I'm thinking that it will simply just give him quest, in return he would unlock certain things. The stuff he'd get are steam engine blueprints, steel production guides, basically information and not strength. If he were to get any skills I'd look for the skills to be crafting and oratory.
Hmm if you want him to use technology and build thing make him magicless at least is a good way to make him an underdog and to give something to surpass, compasating his lack of magic with technology
