Honestly, I don't know. Usually I try to get the design down first then I build story the character.

And I don't know about everyone else, but Google Docs takes forever to load on long Documents. Sometimes it feels like I could type the amount of words I would lost in Word by the time Docs page finally loads.
I always thought a light novel was a hybrid of a comic/manga and traditional book. So it would require more illustrations than the cover (or so I thought).
I've seen more than a few stories claim to be light novels, but virtually all of them contain no art whatsoever.
I assumed the presence art is what separated light novels from traditional novels. Unless there is something else that makes the medium different from stories that are purely text...

Yeah, the thumbnails on SH/RR are small, so a lot of the intricate details and colors are lost as people scroll through dozens of other similar-sized covers. I think it would be great in print or on a comic cover, but when you're competing with a lot of other webnovels with miniaturized...
Yes, it does help. Having more people click on your story is better. If you're usually getting let's say seven clicks a day and a new cover gets you sixty, of course you should switch to the new cover. You need people to click on your story to even retain them in the first place.
