Whatever thing makes you do the words fast. I write in Discord chat then import it over for storage. If I can find a free client which is basicaly Discord but works on mobile and laptops then Discord can die but I tend to collaborate and share, so that is a bonus.

I've experimented with it to catalog characters. I have a few maps I intend to include eventually but it's challenging to figure out how much info to give for first time readers, if they browse there before reading.

If you want a great example of how to tell a story without any characters (sorta), take a look at Ray Bradbury's "There Will Come Soft Rains". You show the reader a story with what clues the setting gives.
