Let's make an AI slob story.

Pack it up folks, we have a winner. It's this generation's "My Immortal". Internet's over.

What are some of your favorite story openings (Author's Edition)

"The story so far: In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move." Can't beat it. Douglas Adams nailed it in one.

    Barking up the wrong tree?

44 and semi-retired here. I feel you. Explaining that you were influenced by Foundation, Caves of Steel, HHGTTG, MASH, and Black Cauldron feels a bit like speaking a different language. But I'll echo what others have said, write what makes you happy. That's what's keeping me sane, anyway.

    Reverse, Reverse!

Reading Shadow's Call backwards you would get: Yeah, I wouldn't read it backward either.

What clichés of talk do you avoid in your fiction?

I don't think I actively avoid anything specifically, since dialogue should be true to the character who is speaking...but I sometimes have to (painfully) force myself to use incorrect words that irritate me in real life: fewer/less envy/jealousy who/whom

    Overfill a story

If what you add does one or more of the following: • Advances the plot • Fills out your characters • Worldbuilds • Entertains Then it's likely NOT overloading the story. The key is managing transitions so it flows smoothly, then you can go back and edit it to cut out/condense anything you...

    Overfill a story

Basically what they said. You've got the start, find the end. Then fill in the basic parts of an arc. What will the climax be? What will lead up to that? What does it look like when you come back down? What prevents your MC from reaching their goal? How do they overcome it? Think of it...

Does writing your story make you feel better or worse?

Better, for the most part. The light chapters make me laugh but even the darker parts feel good when I get to tell my MC the things I wish had been said to me (through other characters, of course). Posting online and the reality of engagement metrics (or lack thereof) has been a real kick in...

    Burnout is funny

Try not to judge me for quoting “Friends” but I see it like this: Dr. Franzblau: I try not to let my work affect my personal life, but it's hard, when you do... what I do [gynecologist]. It's like uh... Well, for instance, what do you do? Rachel: I'm a waitress. Dr. Franzblau: Okay, all right...

The Deurtagonist of my story is extremely Overpowered, but suffers from narcolepsy and lets the Protagonist almost die several times

Long form it could get very difficult to keep that interesting unless you’ve got some interesting twists already up your sleeve. If you do, I can see how it could be interesting. Just be wary that you’re also using a real world medical condition as story fodder. Not saying don’t do it, but...

What are your favorite tropes? and which ones would you avoid writing?

I avoid any trope that takes itself too seriously or is used as short hand for character backstory/trauma. But I handle them in different ways. Too self-serious: brooding grimdork anti heroes with secret royal bloodlines and cursed weapons carrying the soul of an ancient dragon etc etc etc… I...

The laziest thing you do as an author?

I use random name generators. Unless there’s a specific reason for a person to have a certain name I don’t put much thought into it. Sometimes I retcon a meaning if it fits their character but mostly I just assume their parents thought “yeah that’s a nice enough name”.

    Getting naruto shippuden-ed sucks

My MC is an orphan and her biological parents literally never come up because they're not relevant to the story, except for one brief vision in book 4 that will explain some of her traits to the reader (in an "oh that's why she's Like That" way). Then the caster who sees it promptly wipes his...

What makes you love your fiction?

Getting to realize a protagonist who's been taking shape in my mind for decades and watching her grow and overcome. Also, her supporting cast is basically my psyche shot through a prism, so getting to write their arguments and bickering is fun.

Without spoiling anything, post one joke thats in your story today

"Oh, [goats] are staples for a reason. Livelier than a pig, less unwieldy than a cow, lots of personality...isn't that right Frederick? See? Frederick agrees." "Do you know this goat?" "No. He just looks like a Frederick." "Hate to be the one to tell you this, Sundown...but that's a nanny...

How do you control an overpowered character so they don't break the story?

I mean...this is it right here, really. If the story can't be about them advancing in "power" then make it about areas in which they need to grow. My MC is incredibly deadly, but the story revolves around how she keeps people from seeing her that way and how she reconciles her natural talents...

    Deleting chapters

I completely rewrote my introduction chapter because it was dry. Rewrites happen.? I also don't have many readers or followers though, so if you've got people invested you might want to drop a note about it once you do what you need to do to fix it.

How much can you bend the meaning of a tag?

I hate to pile on to what seems to be consensus, but yeah I agree. If I went searching for "Romance" stories and came across a promising series where romance is technically a subplot but not really the plot driver? I'd be mildly annoyed at best. It would be like classifying Star Wars as High...
