Both, the previous works lay the ground base for your current ones. They are always a great thing to look at. Since one can see how much the person has grown. Comparing it from before to the ones now are always a nice thing to see.

Drawing requires one being able to visualize their intent. If one cannot imagine the picture, then they will not be able to draw it. However, this can be helped along by finding references. Those references can be used to help get a base on how you wish to go along with it.
