I prefer it like how a person thinks. If thinking about the past, then past tense, when thinking of the present, then present tense, and the same for future planning. I did X, I'm doing Y, I'll do Z.

Good characters are ones who have relatable flaws and motivations for their goals. It works for all characters you want to go in depth with. And good stories aren't absolutely black and white.

Deny them legal protections based off of not being human. Seize them and their families. All the testing including breeding. Make secret super soldiers to take over the world.
