Honestly the way I would do it would probably to pick one tag (maybe Trans Male Character?), and then scroll down to see if any of the results seem interesting. A lot of authors tag their stories with random stuff, so sometimes it's hard to search multiple tags unless you're positive that...

    On Defining The "BL" Genre

You’re searching for too many things at once! Also, the tags on ao3 are less centralized. Like sometimes there are duplicate tags (like ftm vs. transmale vs Trans Male Character), so you should be aware that some authors might tag their works differently even if they mean close to the same thing!

Correct Tagging: Adult versus Mature, and Ecchi versus Smut

I’ve read your story! :blob_happy: I think based on what I’ve seen, I would say that Adult, Mature, and Smut fits best for your novel.

    On Defining The "BL" Genre

Yes! It’s amazing, especially with how detailed the tags are! Even if you don’t have a fandom that you’re interested in, you can search for “Original Work” and so forth. I like mpreg and omegaverse too much... and I get most of mine from ao3 >.<

    On Defining The "BL" Genre

Yes, like bafflinghaze, I would definitely recommend ao3! I think you might have better luck finding ftm genderbender there! Although LitRPG is much more of RR or SH’s domain.

    On Defining The "BL" Genre

Oh yes! Absolutely! I mean, I'm generally a BG translator/writer, but Chinese fiction has bucketloads of questionable stuff! It's a cultural thing as well... China is just that much more conservative than the West, and the misogyny/internalized misogyny is way more prevalent. As sad as it is...

    On Defining The "BL" Genre

Uhhh, I'm sooooo guilty of this. I don't write BL on this account, but my BG stuff here is like 1000x worse (internalized misogyny or what). But yeah, most of my smut readers seem to be men, and a lot of times I see myself writing in ways cognizant of the fact that >90% of my readers are...

    On Defining The "BL" Genre

The continued resurgence of this issue still leaves me to consider all the negative stigma surrounding GL and BL as terms. Wouldn’t the western term provide less stigma? I know somebody in this thread mentioned that everyone reads everything anyways, but I don’t think that’s necessarily true...

    On Defining The "BL" Genre

I’m almost tempted to argue that the differences are purely regional/geographic in nature rather than fundamentally different genres. (I.E. the difference between women’s fiction in the Philippines vs. US) I can only speak Chinese, but when I see Josei manga (“女性漫画”) in Japanese kanji, the...

    On Defining The "BL" Genre

I guess it just sits a bit uncomfortably about how the genre system reinforces it so heavily, as opposed to letting a site develop its base more organically. To me, seinen/josei as genre categories dips a bit further into the realm of cultural appropriation, in the sense that there are...

    On Defining The "BL" Genre

Certainly  I don't even want to go in the dozens of different ways I'm probably messed up for liking the things that I like... I'm aware of the definitions of seinen/josei. They are applicable outside of East Asian fiction. I think Alice (and many others) brought this up, but I...

    On Defining The "BL" Genre

I suppose. Again, I certainly haven't read as much, and all I can really do is transmit what I heard second-hand from my gay male friends hating BL. I think some of them enjoy other media, but it always stuck with me for a long time how much they disliked talking about BL (I mean, I was the one...

    On Defining The "BL" Genre

I don’t doubt that BL is consumed by queer readers, but rather my main issue/argument is that I think BL as a genre (or label) is inherently exclusionary towards gay male authors. There is a conspicuous dearth of gay male authors, readers, and fans in the BL genre. A majority of fudanshi that I...

    On Defining The "BL" Genre

To go further on what BL means to most people in the Western World, I feel like a google search for "boys love" is very telling: The top urban dictionary result: In short, regardless of what definition we use here (or at NU), the broader English-speaking general public will generally...
