Groundbreaking stories in literature, video games, and TV (Remembering Akira Toriyama.)

-Introductions and defining terms Hello everyone. I was watching a recent video that commented on Akira Toriyama's unfortunate passing, and it got me thinking about this subject. Nobody would dispute, his franchise, Dragonball, was undoubtedly a groundbreaking piece of media. For the purpose...

Find the Deity, Divinity, Myth, Legend, Whatever...

Incorrect on all counts. I intentionally chose something that you are absolutely not going to find in a Google search, and might only find in some very good deep-dives into the lore of the particular region this figure comes from. (Yes, this does comply with the rules in the OP.) EDIT: I will...

Find the Deity, Divinity, Myth, Legend, Whatever...

That one's easy, it's Prometheus. That's a literal moniker he goes by. How about a harder one. "A god retold as a king by a trick of history, he turned into a fish to escape the fancies of his female suitors." (Yeah, I decided to get more wordy than necessary with it so it's not TOO hard as...

What is a good word count per week?

What are you talking about? That's not a bad writer. I write 2000+ word chapters in a single sitting (around 2 hours.) Then, I wait about a day, then come back and edit the chapter. Then, I consider it ready for release. That's the method most really good authors use. Write the entire chapter...

What is a good word count per week?

With 4k word chapters, I'd say 1-2 chapters per week is about right for the first 2 years. You can back that off to 1 chapter per week after those 2 years if you are starting to feel burdened by that pace at that time.

What is a good word count per week?

Early on, you want to update as frequently as you can to build an audience. Keep pushing out chapters at your fastest reasonable pace that doesn't risk burning yourself out for about the first 2 years of posting your series (however many chapters that turns out to be.) At that point, you can...

Hi guys, I need help with something.

I do believe people are over-thinking this problem a little too much. Has anyone stopped to ask the very simple question, "how DO you solve a Rubik's cube?" There is some intelligence and pattern recognition involved in terms of knowing the center squares are stationary and recognizing how the...

What makes a hobgoblin different from other goblins in fantasy novels?

Well, I do have to agree that pre-D&D fantasy and lore are a LOT more diverse and interesting than what came after. That said, a part of the "diverse" part of that is the fact there wasn't a whole lot of agreement on what the characteristics of a given race were. I mean, pre-Tolkein, there was...

What makes a hobgoblin different from other goblins in fantasy novels?

Actually, while he's called the Goblin King in the movie, I think this here is probably the most accurate portrayal of a proper classical hobgoblin in modern pop culture. (Modern being a relative term, of course.) EDIT: And also, it's that nightmare-fuel called "Wizard of Oz 2: Return to Oz,"...

    Akria is dead.

@samwars555 Please for the love of Akira, fix that typo in the thread title.

What makes a hobgoblin different from other goblins in fantasy novels?

I decided to do a quick search on the original lore in response to this thread. What I found was interesting. Turns out, hobgoblins were originally portrayed as friendly, if somewhat mischievous, creatures in English folklore as opposed to the standard goblins (also from English folklore) which...

Mystery was written off as bad writing.

IMO, the only difference between "traditional format" writing and "webnovel" writing is that webnovels tend to have shorter chapters, usually consisting of one or occasionally two major event(s) or idea(s) being addressed per chapter, and they have a tendency to be extreme long-form and more...

    Ten finger typing challenge

Just saying, hitting the apostrophe, quote, and P buttons on a keyboard requires you to go through extra effort to hit them with your ring finger as opposed to the pinky. As such, I just find it highly unlikely someone would actually put in that extra effort specifically to not use their pinky...

    Ten finger typing challenge

Yeah, if you're actually saying you do something that takes that much extra effort, I think we've got a confirmed troll just trying to bait people.

    Daily Wins Mega Thread

I just had my 4 year old nephew bring me Fox in Socks to read to him. I had no idea what that book was or that it was basically one of Dr. Sues' longest books, and 5/6 of it was full of nothing but really difficult tongue twisters upon tongue twisters, but I managed to read the whole thing in a...

Fox girls, cat girls, dog girls, or wolf girls?

But haven't you heard? Fox girls, when raised together with Cat girls, wind up acting exactly the same as Cat girls. (Lol, I know that doesn't make as much sense as the first time I dropped this line, but I just had to drop it anyway as soon as I saw anything related to cat girls.)

That feeling when you accidentaly delete a 4k word chapter and realize you didnt save it elsewhere

Said it before, I'll say it again. Always have a minimum of 1 master copy of everything you've ever written on your hard drive. Never delete the master copies, even if you've decided that it's trash you're never going to post, and even if you've completely re-written a new version of the same...
