On the bright side of this, if your novel does really well, the higher ratings will far outweigh the lower ones. Plus, in my opinion, I believe reviews are the better advertisement rather than the rating system. At least then we get to read why the novel is given that rating and we get to show...

You could do what I once did: write in real-time with an audience. I just said earlier in this thread about using Google Doc and that thing does invite others to observe.

Oh, hey! Now I remember why I used the double-dash in my writing. So, I used to write a lot on Google Docs so that my editor and others could watch me write. If you do the "--" in there, it automatically transforms it into an emdash.
