Think about some stories you have read and think about what could have gone differently if you changed some aspects, like maybe their species, or abilities, and keep changing things until it becomes totally different from the original xD That's not what I do, but it gives you a base to work off...

Just don't have them wanting to do things that only lovers should be doing xD Other than that, friendship comes in many forms, try to think about what kind of friendship you want them to have! Maybe it will be easier if you write it how you would want it to be for yourself. I hope you the best...

I've heard that smiling does trick the brain to make you feel better. However, it's none of people's business what expression you choose to make. Just ignore them and go about your day. You don't owe them anything at all.
