How the heck to market a story?

I disagree. It's good and helps keep things regulated. It prevents people from gaming the view system by bulk posting. You don't want it because it specifically limits you from reposting your story on an anime release date, thus perpetually showing up on the front page. You get 2 a day, so...

How the heck to market a story?

I get how you feel, but you need to also understand bubble feedback. I have people who tell me my story is literally their favorite of all time, and that it's what they've always been looking for. I do not, however, take that to mean it has reach outside of it's niche. It just means I know my...

How the heck to market a story?

As an addendum to my previous post, people are already forgetting steve jobs. If they were called jobs computers, maybe he'd have a better chance. People more frequently associate Bill Gates and Alan Turring with the computer than Steve Jobs. If I had to guess, your story isn't an Alan...

How the heck to market a story?

One doesn't make themselves a historically recognized figure. History does that. I guess, unless you decide to do something evil. Those people get recognized.

How the heck to market a story?

As I started looking into those other fanfictions you mentioned, I found a reddit post that you said you've only started actually putting this to paper a little over a year ago. Before that, for 20 years, everything was in your head as you mulled over the idea. I've been writing my story for a...

How the heck to market a story?

Then you need to be spending less time writing, and more time actively promoting your work. "Every time somebody says recommend me 5 Ranma fics" post your own list with the obligatory "I included mine on the list". As for breaking out of one population and into a bigger one... it's not simply...

How the heck to market a story?

You said you'd seen other Ranma fanfics reach an audience the level of Salvos. I don't even care if it's that big (which is huge), just bigger than yours by a few times. Your response was to then backtrack on your initial statement, and say it's not about a big reach, its about residual reach...

How the heck to market a story?

I'll commit, right now, to admitting I'm wrong about your market share, and give it an honest look, if you can link Ranma fanfictions to me to look at to see if they're actually that big. If they are that big, then I'm wrong about potential market.

How the heck to market a story?

You misunderstand. The people who haven't gotten that chance yet aren't people who already read. 98% of people who read online stories are already aware of MASSIVE fanfiction stories. I read Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality. I've had the option, almost everyone has. Most people...

How the heck to market a story?

It's not that it's not applicable. It's that it'll tell you that you're already reaching your target audience. You've already cast the net wide, and caught all the fish your net can catch. Pokemon fanfics trend on the front page on RoyalRoad all the time too. The site isn't biased. You've...

How the heck to market a story?

It's not really the platforms. It's the readers. People don't want to give it a chance specifically because it's in the Ranma bubble. My thread that you'll read will point out that fact. My first advice was helpful advice. Your initial question wasn't phrased to mean what you wanted it to...

    The fall of KDP [Rant]

Yeah. This is only partially in my wheelhouse. I used to work for a subsidiary of Emerson doing automation work, so I would occasionally have to deal with international red tape on projects. Just before covid took off in the US (early march of 2020) I worked with some Chinese engineers on a...

I suppose I should also throw in my own thread I wrote months ago on the subject.

How the heck to market a story?

Many people here, and your own responses, have indicated that you've tried dozens of things. At this point, you're realistically maximizing maybe 10% more readers. If you're really, REALLY lucky, maybe you'll triple your reads in a few years.

That then defeats the whole, free to use aspect of self-publishing for people in non-market countries. I would like it to be optional though. That I would take.

To bear further bad news, if you get too popular with the reboot coming up, you might find yourself on the bad end of a Japanese DMCA request. Japan has notoriously viscious copywrite laws.

    The fall of KDP [Rant]

I'm sure that they do that. The issue is that they have to be the ones to make sure it's kosher, not the author. Which is why it's convoluted and partially automated. If the author lists it in a way that gets around their filters, then Amazon pays the fine to Saudia Arabia and blacklists the...

How the heck to market a story?

You've got major Savior and God complexes going on. You need help. I'm glad the character helped you through tough times. Everyone hopes their work does that, and you think yours has, and that's good. Though, you're essential worshiping a fictional character, and hoping other people worship...

    The fall of KDP [Rant]

I wish this could be the case, but since Amazon has to negotiate with these countries, and they're aware that realistically, they couldn't actually get any money or extraditions of US authors who subvert the system, the countries would likely just resort to banning Amazon as a whole. It's the...
