    I use Libre Office, but you have to enable the autosave function. Not had any problems with losing chapters.

    I think it's because you're trying to make it sad? Don't try to make a scene sad. The scene will be sad on its own naturally. I had readers that told me they cried from a scene in my novel, and I wasn't trying to make them cry. It was just a sad reality for the main character.
