The term "villain" is of French descent and means literally "villager". The term derives from a genre of medieval knightly literature, where the protagonist, who was predominately a knight, saved a damsel in distress from a bunch of unruly, savage, heinous and nefarious villagers who were the enemy. The knight usually slaughtered the boorish villagers to save the maiden, which won him her heart.
