I think outside of a grammar checker, or having a friend look at it, the best free recourse for editing is a screen reader. That way you can hear your story and catch awkward phrasing and the like. Of course you can read it aloud yourself, but for longer works, that is more work than necessary imo.

But thing is, human creations, like humans themselves, are flawed.
And interestingly, just like Milo statue prove, is that sometimes imperfection is more attractive than perfection.
