Married women had no legal identity separate from their husbands, could not own property, sign contracts, or sue in their own names. Not allowed to vote or hold office until the 1920s, required to have a male co-signer for loans & credit cards. Numerous professions in law and medicine excluded women until the late 19th or early 20th century. Women were and still are to some, second-class citizens.
