Why do I feel like I've recommended this before?

But who cares. It's been a while since I've recommended an emo song, and this one is the genesis of midwest emo. So much spawned from this song, from this band, from this album.

First off, how many songs do you know that fade in? Not a lot. That already adds to the cool factor.

Then you're smacked with a whirlwind of guitars: Davey von Bohlen's big chords and Victor Villarreal's acrobatic riffage.

Tim Kinsella screams goofy nonsense that nonetheless feels real.

And keeping it all in time is a young Mike Kinsella on the skins, not knowing he's going to change alt rock forever in 4 years

idk who their bassist is tbh
Reminded of the time the annoying friend of my middleschool friend group decided he wanted all of us to write a manga together. It was all such a pain in the ass that the artist of the group declared she would go deeper into Islamic aniconism and would swear off drawing faces forever, just to get out of the arrangement.

So he wasn't annoying because he wanted you to do weeb stuff. He was annoying because he wanted to bring all your talents together to make something of value.

I don't know why you're being so confrontational about someone you don't even know :blob_hmm:

You don't know what he's like or what even went down. I was just sharing a weird little anecdote from my past, but you're making all the assumptions.

I'm rage baiting you. Kid was probably super annoying, I don't know him.
Looking on the internet, I've found a lot of Southeast Asian literary publications that have long been abandoned. Kinda sad :blob_hmm:

There are a bunch of SEA-based online literary publications, but the vast majority of them are defunct and have been for years. It's a shame 'cause I think they'd be a really nice way for creatives to connect and share :blob_hmm:

I don't know if this means Southeast Asians just aren't interested in that sort of stuff, or if English as a lingua franca is still limiting for a lot of people.

:meowsip:Probably the latter~. I am not writing in my native either~.

Let me put you on some real game.

You see, Indonesians invented music. By that I mean gamelan music pioneered blast beats (as heard in the video above) and math rock.

You've likely heard gamelan in its many forms somewhere before. Numerous foreign music dorks have traveled to the archipelago to study this exotic yet intricate style of literally heavy metal music, from Debussy and Satie all the way to Steve Reich.

Sonic Youth did a weird gamelan track in 1982, the Godspeed You! Black Emperor Track "We Drift Like Worried Fire" was originally titled "Gamelan".

And perhaps most famously, King Crimson's Beat era was Robert Fripp trying to incorporate gamelan's complex interlocking melodies into a rock context. This era of Crimson was instrumental in the genesis of math rock, so whenever you listen to Toe or American Football, just know you're listening to Indonesian history ??

    Feeling a little woke.

This is the catchiest song about sex work I've ever heard. Just a nice little pop tune that extends empathy to people who rarely ever get it.

I hope it isn't too obvious that I get my recommendations from Anthony Fantano :blob_hmm:
