I think making the protagonist in some form uninteresting is a way to heighten awareness or depth of the world and other characters.

I doubt, though, that it was intentional on her part.

In fact, this is why I write a Naruto fanfic. I like the world building and potential. I hate the MC and the cast.

I am guilty of that, but in my story, he is dead as dead can be.

You get a free pass, then. But you seem to suffer from the same competency issue as I.

Mmhm, I don't hate the cast per se. (Although I do in Naruto, that main cast is whack). But I wanted to write an alternative world where No-nose succeeded at first.

You have my respect. Harry Potter is a plot holey affair, to put things mildly. I would despair at the sight of the canon material.

In fact, the world is engaging, but if you let your brain work for even a second, the entire world comes crashing down on you.

That's why it's best to write an alternate history; it is the most flexible way to do it.

But is truly a fanfic, then? How far is too far. That is a question I often wondered.

In the case of Harry Potter it is not problematic as the cast doesn't carry the story, but if your franchise is more character driven.

Most Harry Potter fanfics I've seen have Potter as a side character,

It is still a fanfic as I am transforming someone else's work to my liking. Going by the reviews and how often I have been on trending with it since hitting the 100th chapter, I must do something well.
