On your note of post 3. I did say that there are differences between artists so of course Code Geass would look different than Naruto. Though they still follow the same rules of having varying color palettes and being more defined.

As for the political standing. I was referring to real-world politics. Anime can and usually does better if it has some form of politics. Though, Shows that are run to enforce a real-world political agenda usually are terrible. Mainly because people want to escape real-world politics for a while. That and it's just bad writing to base entire characters off of your personal views and beliefs.

"1) All you've done is pointed out these two things exists. You have yet to make a semblance of a point."

I'm telling you that the art style of cartoons is pretty different from the art style of anime... Like, geez, I don't even get how you can even disagree on this point. The difference is obvious at a glance?

Like, sure, obviously not all animes will look the same, but they're certainly more similar to one another than cartoons in general are to animes in general.

It's the same as comparing western comics to manga... I don't need to explain why they have different art styles, the difference is obvious at a glance, like... Geez, wtf even is your point in trying to deny that?

"2) I'm not talking about the origin. The word as its understood in English. Because in Japanese, they don't have a separate word for "cartoon" do they."

They do actually. カートゥーン is the third result that appears in Jisho (the best JP>EN dictionary available) if you type "Cartoon".

They also have ベースボール for Baseball, even though 野球 already exists.

They also often times use ファイア for Fire instead of 火, because they feel like using English Pronunciation often times makes for cooler special attack names.

Pendleton Ward was part of the same team as the others. The general homogony through Cartoon Network is because of this. The fact is that certain studios have certain styles. Doesn't mean we invent a new word for each studio.

The painter example is. . . bad. You can quantiably list the differences between impressionism and renaissance. I can provide you a list and 100% of the time it will conform to that list.

Words get ported over between languages with some regularity. Anime is just another example of it. There is no issue with having redundant words.

Heck. Cartoon and Animation are technically the same thing to begin with. Why do we have 2 English words for it in the first place? Wouldn't just Animation Suffice?

At this point, I don't even care. People can think what they want. It's not like it really matters whether or not it's a cartoon or an Anime. Art is art and there are different styles of it. Just enjoy what you want to enjoy. If that pisses people off then they can suck it.

And once again, varying color pallete. You are saying I can't find any bright cartoons or hazy anime? Akira is sure bright. . . right?

On politics you've lost me

You're just overthinking this way too much... Anime is just the Japenese word for animation. People in the US heard the word being spoken by Japanese people enough times and ended up adapting it to talk about Japanese animations.

On that note, this isn't even a English-exclusive thingy. Portuguese also uses Anime for Japanese animations, and we don't even have a word for Cartoon. We just call those as "Animated Drawings."

Just stop. It doesn't even matter. It's a DRAWING! Who cares what it's called. Just don't be a douche about it.

:blob_hmm: what is style... it's a multilayered question and would rely on context to be thought about...

But to begin, one needs to take a walk in the world known as [Aesthetics theory] and eventually you will find the road called [Formalism]... feel free to ignore the branch "what is beauty". that is a waste of time. But instead, focus on what "Form" is. And along that path, one would be grappling with "Style".

Like, what makes a Noir a noir, it is just peppering it with Femme Fatals? No? is it more than that
What makes a Russian novel a Russian novel, coz when you pick one up knowing nothing about it, 1 chapter in, you KNOW what it is, thinking "I know this feeling, I know this Style... this is a Russian novel" (Citation: Vita nostra).

That's basically my argument, in that there is no unifying style to describe the word and it exists solely as a marketing gimmick. Although I'm tired of pointing it out now.

??? I don't know anything about that. I am just an armchair academic, that likes Philo and Literary analysis And I spoke only of Style and form unrelated to the wider topic...

Tho I thought your point was "anime is just a word people made up because they were embarrassed about saying cartoon."
Which was a "hot take" that exists solely to generate controversy and discussion. Am I wrong?
TheTrinary
TheTrinary
Well the implication in that is that it doesn't fit any scheme like those that you've laid out. While we could define Noir quite clearly, we could not do so with anime.

Ok, so "Anime" as a word... would it not be more accurate to say it is a term created from historical etymology for the purpose of categorising media? And one of the drivers of doing so is to make the media more accessible which can be partly to make something more marketable/exploitable.
