@TheTrinary If you wanna talk about stylistic difference, than anime tends to also be quite different from cartoons though? Like, in art style at the very minimum.
Sure, some stuff like Avatar follows a similar style to Animes, and I'm sure there must be some Anime out there that follows a similar style to Western Cartoons, but... More often than not, they tend to be quite different.
Lol. "Figure out it out yourself" is not an example. Anime is completely void of any meaning and completely interchangeable with cartoon. It's just a term created created in marketing to make children feel more edgy and to make adults feel less embarrassed.
Sorry I haven't responded to this yet. I have been at work. Explaining the differences would be difficult because anime and cartoons have changed throughout the years. For example, earlier cartoons differed on how detailed they were as stuff like the smurfs were way less detailed than scooby doo. Anime in its early days had the same issue with Astro boy being less detailed and Gundam being far more detailed.
Today though, Cartoons have changed to have characters be more rounded and less detailed while Anime characters have a more defined and sharper outline. Obviously, there will be some differences between artists but they usually follow the same rules. Cartoons being cutesy, rounded, and follow a specific color palette. While Anime has more developed, sharp, and use various color palettes.
For example, take most of the characters from Steven Universe and compare them to characters from Naruto. You'll probably see the difference. A lot of this has to do with cultural art and what types of art equipment was available. There are a few outliers but when those artists were asked about their style they have usually said that they took inspiration from the other. Avatar is one of the most well-known
I can see why there might be a blur between the two. Though allow me to explain what really sets the two apart the most. Politics, Western styles of animation, especially in recent years has been heavily influenced by political agendas and views. Anime on the other hand usually don't bother with politics as much. yeah, there may be some issues being addressed
that can have a political motivation but it's usually an undertone. For anime, the story is the main focus. Anything that comes with the story is just extra. There is no extreme and annoying focus on something that has nothing to do with the story itself (looking at you, High Guardian Spice) Just a story and its characters. Something a lot of mediums have lost touch with.
Besides... I already answered the origin of the word for you. T.K.Paradox also gave some extra background about it, so... Yanno, you're just being silly at this point.
Post 1) This supports my point.
Post 2) Super generalized to the point that you're pooling from a single set creative talent. Yeah Steven Universe and Gravity Falls look similar. But all those guys literally worked together on the same shows starting out. Steven Universe doesn't look like Archer
Post3) See post 3. Not to mention you can compare Naruto to other anime that look nothing alike. Naruto doesn't look like anything like Code Geass. I guess one of those isn't anime.
Post 4) I guess slice of life anime are fictional. Also attack on titan has politics. Can't be an anime. Shit man. AKIRA was super political.
1) All you've done is pointed out these two things exists. You have yet to make a semblance of a point.
2) I'm not talking about the origin. The word as its understood in English. Because in Japanese, they don't have a separate word for "cartoon" do they.
Post 1 does support your point. As for post two, I was going to use Adventure time as well but I had to cut it due to word count. Even so, you haven't looked at my point on modern cartoons and animes having differences based on where they were made. You wouldn't say that Van Gogh's style is the same as DaVinci's even though they utilize similar methods.
