Yeah...I remember there being something like a shortened mode? That made progression faster. I dont mind losing, but it just takes soooo long to recover
It's less about the time it takes to reset, and more the fact that there's nothing I can do to counter it. No matter what, the game will just randomly hit the "Kill Player" button and erase all your progress. I'm convinced that the devs just didn't know how to properly balance a game, and rather than fix it, they just decided to call it a feature so that all the internet's tryhards would defend it for them.
Honestly, the only reason I keep going back to it is because it has the best atmosphere of any game I've ever played. The graphics, the character designs, the music, and THE MOTHERLOVING NARRATOR all work together to make it one of the only games that actually feels Lovecraftian, and it definitely does it the best. The only other games that come close are Bloodborne and Blasphemous.
I gave DD2 a try. It's definitely better than the first since losing doesn't permakill your heroes, it just sends you back to the start of the map and rolls the quirk slot machine again. It's still annoying how eager it is to instakill you, though.
Yeah I played the second one at release. Think they've updated it a lot since then. But when I played the major bosses were pure bullshit. Basically had puzzle mechanics that you had to look at the wiki to fight against properly
Might need to try it again tho since it was awhile ago
The story and atmosphere also isn't as good. "Help, I opened an obviously evil door and now there are monsters beneath my house" is a way better setup for this kind of game than "It's the Lovecrapocalypse so let's go on a roadtrip."
That is why i question western devs brain sometimes (and prefer eastern).
Clearly they got the biggest original ideas, worth lot and lot of $$$, but its like they dont give a fuck about its preciousness and make it/them into shit. (both AAA and indies)
Meanwhile, i hear china AAA companies, milk their IPs to death, to like 7 sequels.
