What do you use to write with?

I use google docs so I can access it no matter where I am. When I was younger, though, I used one of these:

It was really handy back when I didn't have 24/7 internet access. You can buy them for, like, $30 on ebay, and a few AA batteries will keep it running for 700 hours. It has a built in spell check and thesaurus. It lets you have eight files open simultaneously, but you can save others in the background, and it can hold roughly 200 pages of text. Then when you're ready, you just connect it to your computer and transfer it all over. The only reason I stopped using it was because formatting didn't carry over, so if I wanted to italicize any words (and I italicize a lot of words) I'd have to go back over the doc after transferring it to re-italicize everything. Also, like I said, now that I have internet access pretty much everywhere I go, it's easier to just use google docs and not have to transfer it onto my computer.
That looks like a slightly advanced version of the one my parents got me when I was learning to type in 1984 or '85. Had an optional, receipt-type printer or could be manually attached to most printers of the time.

Another Scrivener user here. It has a lot of great features, but they're never where you think they should be. I spend a lot of time Googling how to do certain functions. But it's great for writing, organizing your ideas, and formatting books into EPUBs.

I write in my pocket sketchbook (I use it as a notebook as well), and then I write it into a website called Reedsy with some tweaks here and there.

I also use Obsidian, I have google drive automatically sync my Obsidian vault folder, and I have a program on my phone called DriveSync that automatically downloads/uploads my vault folder when any changes are made. After setup, it's so automatic it's basically like using google docs anyway while having the files locally available all the time too.

I like obsidian because I can search all of my chapters even though they're individual files, and I can have all of my notes like characters and locations handy on the left there. I also have a few notes handy on the right, for more common things like remembering how many characters are in each group and things like that. I also have multiple layouts that I can switch between for my different stories with their related notes available on the right.

As for me, I always use Obsidian. File management is a breeze, tons of features yet still minimalist, and it can also be linked to my Second Brain.

Visual bonus: My workspace looks like a cockpit.

Edit: And I use FolderSync to back up everything to Google Drive, since my laptop is like 80 years old :blob_dizzy:
Excuse me, what on Earth is this? This seems incredibly over-complex for words on a page. Feel free to treat this as a rhetorical question, because I'm curious enough to just Google it now.

I remember back then we use these for making reports. Those stupid seniors said since we learn archaeology, we tend to work in place without electricity.

Trust me. It makes your fingers hurt.

Oh? Now? I use AI.
Nah kidding, i use ms-word. I prefer to have my chapters accessible even when theres no internet.
....shit, those seniors was right

I didn't use this for writing originally, just for notes and building a second brain. It's all set up, so I just jump in and write.

Plus, I intentionally opened all the panels to flex a bit...

A basic tree view, a text/info box(with columns here), a useless graph, tabs and a calendar.

Just a notepad for me :blob_hmm:
Same here. Its just a text editor to me.
I will say, I'm a linux only user, so...
my "notepad" equivalent is a slightly more robust thing called "xed".
also, if I want to formet something visually appealing/big...
libre office is more than the equal of MS office and *free*

but in the end, its just a text editor.
its me, a keyboard, and a text file.
you don't want to over complicate it.

I'm more worried about what KEYBOARD I type on, than what text editor I use for creating the text files.
