For a typical soldier war is 97% of complaining about the commanding office and 3% of "oh s#it"

For scaling way up, you gotta use group.

1st platoon

2nd regiment

3rd army

EG: The [3rd army] advanced to the rhine, setting up camp, exchanging fire with the [enemy forces] across the river.

Groups instead of single characters.

Expert here. Been through one (watch on the phone).
War is usually very boring.
Different pov might help to make it less boring.
if you think watching a war on the phone or on TV is boring? Maybe...
what do you think its like for the poor assholes stuck in the middle of the hot zones? Just saying.
Boring, would be an improvement.
Can you imagine being in a First Person Shooter game? But, if you lose, you DIE.
I refuse to make combat "entertaining" with wise cracking curb-stomping cape wearing aura farming wanna be characters.

now, on the top of the "ensemble cast".
My research tells me:
--- this can be done
---it should be avoided by the beginner
---even the experienced, should rethink how "ensemble" they;re gonna go.
---its a difficult thing to pull off, at best

You;re risking @Eldoria beating you over the HEAD,
with a thick "Calculuis Narrative" book in each hand.

then when you wake up from the beating?
she's smiling...
"Get up you weenie. Only 19 more treatments to go!"
*whak*whak*whak*

"Authors respect big thick books, especially when hit over the head with one by Eldoria"
Her TedTalk can get brutal, though she does it so sweetly, its just charming.
I would not invoke her wrath by trying to go ensemble.

@Bimbanana :
no shade, but... any screenplays make it to TV or anything?
or at least you got into the final running a few times? Just that would be enough for me to take notice.
I admit, that "screenplay advice"much of it translates directly to novel writing.

Yes. I was (maybe-ish) there. It was hot. Thanks.

I was entertaining myself very much. I also might have worn a cape but I don't disclose much about it.

@Bimbanana
Just write whatever floats peoples boat, its a novel. It can be anything.

Its amazing what human beings can desensitize to and have become normalized.
the next thing you know, you feel like you're "just doing the basics" and trying to keep your shit together...
and if they're telling the truth, about everyone there will admit it.

my rule of thumb. anything dangerous?
I trust experienced hands, that seem level headed.
I follow their lead, do what they do.
that goes from operating dangerous machinery, up to anything else imaginable.

Yep, i have like 15 protagonist maybe more in this war arc that will be spreaded out across the globe. Sigh, you're right i guess no way to avoid this arc becoming 120++ chapters

Already done that. Now is about people fighting. About struggle. About devastation! About HORROR! MUAHAHAHA wait what am talking about again?

uhh, yes i've made the map when everything still peaceful. Guess i need to stare at it again and imagine which country got dragged and what possible campaign would be cool enough to be shown. (OMG THIS IS IT! THANKS!)

so when friends come over to party, you can stop the movie, and point to your name in the little print in the credits? that's so cool.

The Walking Dead is a serial, it is fundamentally different from a novel. But then again, The Walking Dead doesn't actually have 17 protagonists. It has several main characters for a given arc. And that itself is a problem. Most criticisms about The Walking Dead is that it has way too many characters and the writers didn't know what to do with them.

While Ai-chan didn't watch the entirety of the serial (got bored by the 5th season). these main characters did not function as the protagonists at the same time. They are protagonists of their own arcs. The main protagonist is still only Rick Grimes and the story still pivots around "what's grimes doing now" or "if grimes were here" or "grimes would have something to say about that" even after he left.

So while opinions differ, Ai-chan thinks those various protagonists in The Walking Dead are still just supporting characters to provide a different perspective and not the main element of the story. Still, that's Ai-chan's opinion on The Walking Dead. Ai-chan actually isn't a fan of that serial after Season 4, it has way too many characters.

I grew tired of it in the second season myself (actually once they reached the CDC it kind of started to bore me) - but making Rick the MC was a showrunner choice; the original comics didn't have a central MC - because nobody lived long enough to become one.

Same, started getting bored of it on the second season. But Ai-chan still watched it on and off until season 4. By season 4 Ai-chan spent more time snoring than watching so when season 5 came, Ai-chan took a look at the first episode and then just stopped.

What you said about the comic not having a central protagonist because nobody lived long enough would make more sense storytelling-wise than to have one story having 17 different protagonists. In this sense, it can be argued that each arc is a different story, with different storytellers. Ai-chan was cautioning against having too many protagonists at the same time.

Huh? This got revived again?

Ah, okay, another reminder that someone apparently a storyteller who stands above a hollywood story that making hundreds of millions dollars.

Anyway, if you’ll excuse me, I don’t want to betray my readers’ expectations so I’ll be returning to my hermitage to write that global conflict (the one in the thread title), and figure out where to place my protagonists (yes, plural, and no, I don’t use the word MC for a reason).

Toodle do~
