Basically you’re in an Isekai universe, and you’re told that using magic consumes your life force.

The average magician dies by age 30.

Would you still consider going to a magic academy to learn magic?

What if tuition was moderately expensive, like going to university on Earth?
1. How fast would magic have to drain your life force for you to refuse to learn magic?

2. Is magic worth your life?

3. Is there something that would wish you could accomplish with magic?

I feel like there was a manga/anime/novel that had that prospect.
Oh, I remember a mecha anime where the users lost their memories every time they used the mechas.
At the end, the MC actually dies cos he runs out of memories, thus his life force gets completely drained.

Um...what was it called...?
Ah!
Kakumeiki Valvrave.
'-'

As for the question, I would need more context, tbh...

What is this life force thing? Do I get more by eating, etc?

Oh, you edited it.
1. I think it depends on how much magic would need to be used in day to day life for me to answer that.
2. That depends on what the magic could do...
3. A cure for everything and anything, a solution to pollution, a solution to energy, a solution to famine, etc...
I think you get the gist.

What if you’re told that magic can do anything... as long as you pay the sufficient price?

Well... We all die anyway and after an extremely short span of time in the grand scheme of things... So I don't think casting magic from a lifespan is inherently a big deal... But its hard to say if its worth it, without knowing what the magic could actually do and precise cost of it...

Well no matter what I do, I would still have the same chances as anyone else willing to risk their lifespan. Shortening my life just to have a fighting chance doesn't sound that efficient. If people make me angry I'll just outlive them then piss on their grave.

I feel there are too many specifics that were left out for me to be able to make a proper choice.

For example, how hard is it to learn magic? How strong are the effects? What can be done with magic?

Do I have to sacrifice life just to learn/practice it before I'm actually going to use it for practical purposes? (If I have to expend too much life just on practice to be able to use it properly then the initial price might be too high in the first place before I even have usable magic)

There are also not enough options for me to select. My actual threshold would possibly be in the range of 5 years of lifespan to the entirety of my life (instant-death) depending on the effects.

If the effects of the magic were strong, and I didn't have to sacrifice a huge amount of my lifespan just practicing, then I would be fine with very high numbers 5, 10, 20 years for one use.

Isn't that kind of thing something you can be arrested for?
Public indecency, or something?

Desecration of graves is a delict. No need to investigate for public indecency.

Anyone can learn magic if they go to school for it. It's effects are about as strong as what's typically depicted of magicians/mages in most stories.

Do I have to sacrifice life just to learn/practice it before I'm actually going to use it for practical purposes? (If I have to expend too much life just on practice to be able to use it properly then the initial price might be too high in the first place before I even have usable magic)
Yes, when you go to school and practice magic, you are also consuming mana and therefore your life force.

The average magician lives until about ~30 years old (after all their schooling and occupational stuff).

I'd use it a bit, but I'd read as much as possible about it before attempting to cast it. I don't want to waste too much of my life on practice. I probably wouldn't bother going to the school but just pick up a few books specific to the things I want to do. If the school requires casting as homework and for passing exams, that's not cool.

Nope I wouldn't find it worth it. Sure I can do fancy stuff, but then I still die young, most likely unable to truly appreciate what I accomplished because I would die before the reality and nostalgic pride of what I accomplished sunk in. No thanks. Magic doesn't sound like much of a "gift" to me if this were the case.

And sorry but, fuck people. I ain't diminishing my life by such a large margin for people I know nothing of and about. Help humanity? HA! How about put in your own effort.

Yes you can. I've pissed on the grave of someone I hated and I still occasionally when I'm passing the area, pour lemon juice on the tombstone. They hated lemon anything.

1. Eeh, whatever.

2. Magic is dumb and stupid and makes no sense and my brain hurts the more i try to figure out how it works.
Also mages r lame with their colorful, flowy robes and giant, obnoxiously fashionable hats.
No im not jealous, shut up!

3. No.
