Standard gallery/stock photos for new novels without a cover.

Enable authors to select a cover image for their new novel by selecting from a gallery of stock images. If this function could also include basic text editing, so that they could write their title on the image, then it would be superb. This feature would greatly improve the "look and feel" of new novels and ScribbleHub as a whole and eliminate the standard drab blue "SribbleHub" cover, that's repeated on so many novels.

As the saying goes, an image contains a thousand words - and we all judge a book by its cover(?) ?

I like the basic cover, it's a visible branding. If someone wants to get an image from databanks, they will do so, or use other artworks as people are doing. You know, a little bit of initiative is also a thing. It shows that the author cares much more than the others.

I mean, I can see the appeal in having it directly accessible on the site but who would be making/maintaining/checking (copyright-wise) that gallery? It's probably easier for authors to just go and use one of the already existing stockphoto sites.

One could commission an artist to make 5-10 standard stock images (1-3 for each genre). As far as branding goes, I'd suggest using a logo, that is pre-placed on the image. The author could then choose to fill out a text box for novel title and author name. For diversity, different fonts could also be used.

I love the generic SH waterfall a lot. It distinguishes a sort of a site's own brand, and I appreciate that. RR also has one (worse than ours ^^) but I think a single "cover-less" image helps a lot with making the site feel unique.

Although I wouldn't mind if there were 2-3 three more "SH brand" images in the same exact style just to give the newcomers a bit more freedom with picking one. Waterfall is kind of "too fantasy", and there might be one for "cover-less scifi", "coverless contemporary", and the like. But they all would have to look similar so as not to break away the overall SH stylization...

But I wouldn't want there to be more than 1 "cover-less" image for every genre (and the selection of genres shouldn't be more than the most generic ones -- fantasy, scifi, SOL). It needs to convey the idea that it's not a final cover somehow, so repetitiveness and lack of precision works perfect for that.

Also, who would pay for such an artist?

I don't know, as theres no fancy or easy solution to conjure up nice looking, royalty-free, and public domain artwork.

It probably does And you'll be surprised if I tell you that even after looking at it again just now, I still have trouble recognizing that as a waterfall. So apparently, I'm not just an idiot (which I already admitted to once today) but also visually-challenged. Ah, the joys of being young ...

*ahem* Anyway, (yes, I'm being needlessly chatty today, I know), it would probably be nice already to just have colored ones for simplicity's sake if this was a thing. You know, like, just a differently-colored background depending on the main genre maybe and then the text or something

Hard to do for urban contemporary ^^. Waterfalls wouldn't fit! And the scifi one would have to be like a green waterfall against the acidic-orange sky or something, which would also look weird, lol.

Or do you mean the simplest color with text? I think anyone can do that even without the SH having a choice of default covers... so there would be no need for them.

Yes, yes, this! And personally, I think everybody could use a stock photo without it being on SH as well but then again, I have a background in graphics so I should probably not be the judge of that
