I doubt the one star reviews' sincerity.

There is no way such a story could ever deserve only one star.

Sure. :blob_melt: According to this logic, many of us would have no 1 stars at all, but we do.

Must be a troll then~
Best to just ignore them:blob_sir:
I can ignore them when it's me they're yelling at, but it's hard when they're yelling at someone else.

It's like hearing pages tearing in a library.

What if:
The trolls read this thread and started spamming *2 instead of *1?
I'd be madder. >:(

EDIT: I am madder. >:(

Tree of aeons is dope though i can see why someone might be put off by the early chapters which aren't as good as the latter.

I think its one of the few serials that consistently makes me excited for a new chapter.

Let's see....
Yes, the story is good. But is it the best ever? No.
Sure I would not rate it 1-star. But does it deserve a thread complaining about 1-stars? Definitely no!

Trust me there are/were people that didn't like the works of Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, Tolkien and J.K Rowling. While there are others that say that the stories of Stephenie Meyer and E. L. James are the best ever.

Moral is: readers are human, they rate with their emotions. Unless the rating system is changed to one that only allows us to vote 2-stars and up, every story will get a few 1-stars eventually.

THE END

I mean lets be honest, is a 1 star rating ever deserved?

For what reason do people ever rate a story 1 star?

Well, there is the obvious case of trolling or trying to discourage a story from being popular- but for what reason would someone want to do this in the first place?

Jealousy could be a reason, but I think there is a simpler reason here.

Nobody in their right mind would ever rate something 1 star unless they hated the premise of the story with their entire being.

If a story was badly written I don't think that will necessarily get people to 1star it, unless it is so bad to the point where it is unreadable.

Rather, someone will dislike something about the direction of the story.

They dislike the mc.

They dislike the premise.

They dislike the plot and how things happen.

They dislike the characters.

They dislike the setting.

Usually a 1 star review is caused not because someone dislikes all of these things, but because they dislike a single one of them to such an extent that they decide to just say screw this story 1 star.

At the end of the day, this is opinion. People can rate whatever they want, and aren't forced to give a review or think about the things they like about a story. If they dislike a single thing, they might just pull the trigger on the 1star.

That's a very thoughtful answer! One that I'd never considered.

I wasn't expecting thoughtful answers out of this thread, but I learned something!

I wonder if I would have known it had I studied marketing? It feels like something a person knowledgeable of marketing would know.

Where did you learn it, if you don't mind my asking? Personal musings or something external?

Mainly my own personal experience with haters on my own story. For example, on RR almost nobody rates 1 star like ever. The people there tend to put a lot more thought into their reviews and on the story in general, however here on SH the people are 2 ways.

5 star or 1 star.

Like or dislike.

Good or bad.

Why would there be such a big difference in my own ratings for the same story if it weren't because the people here are more impulsive?

I don't mean to take a slight at the people on SH. This is merely what I have seen. Almost 50% of my ratings on here are 1 star, whereas only 5% of my ratings on RR are the minimum rating of 0.5 stars.

There could also be the difference in taste. That much is true. However I will point out that my average rating on both sites is almost the same. The difference is in the distribution.

My story is highly controversial, so I consider 1-star ratings a badge of honor ?

I give 5 stars to novels I don't even read, being honest most of this site novels don't deserve 1 star, the bad writing, plot development (most of the novels don't even have a end!), boring characters, the cliché scenes etc.

uhm, I have to disagree with you there, on RR you're not considered an author unless you've had a few 0,5-star bombs. It's become so common that it's now a badge of honor.

No matter where you post, there will always be people who have some reason to give a story the lowest rating. The reasons are as different as the people giving them.

In my opinion, it's the system itself that's flawed. There's a reason youtube dropped the star ratings, because it's useless.
The bulk of people give the highest star rating when they like something or the lowest when they don't.
That's fine. It's basically like or dislike.
The problem appears when there's people who actually think about their rating and give something in between because that's what they consider the rating the story is worth.
Most authors seem to think most readers are from the second group of people and not the first, which skews the perception to that anything less than a top rating is bad. It's not.

A three tiered -like, neutral, and dislike- rating system would make it easier and clearer to choose your rating as a reader and reduce author annoyance by a large factor. But for some reason the different webnovel sites seem to just adore the use-impaired 5 star system.

Tree of Aeon? I guess I'm putting my own head on the block now, but so be it:

I found the first part to be a a very good story, well written, and with some interesting twists on the standard Isekai genre.
Then something in the story changed after the "fell down a hole" part. The story stops being innovative, and kinda lost its momentum. For me it read as a mindless rant after that, it went on and on and on, until I finally gave in and dropped reading it. The story had lost it's spark, it's all super-predictable, and for me nothing I would call entertaining.

So, If the reader wasn't too awestruck by the ideas in the first part, it might deserve a very strong 3, for being overall well written.
Subtract 1 for drawing out unneccesarily long about nothing worth reading.
And finally subtract 1 for loosing any momentum or orginality, as well as seemingly changing genre: The focus of the storyline went from innovative Isekai to a poorly disguised Dota fandom.
3-1-1=1. There you have it.It's plausible it was sincere.

Seeing that the 1 star review is gone, I'd guess its time to congratulate OP.
